I am so disappointed to learn this! Chewy.com has been a great place to buy pet food over the past several years. Petsmart was bought out by a large conglomerate in 2014, and has steadily gone downhill in customer service and pricing. Hate to see fewer options for pet lovers such as myself.

(2,795 posts)And I don't really pay all that much more for better quality food. Because there is no bloated marketing budget tied to many of the brands I buy at the locally owned pet food store.

(15,220 posts)First off, I run a rescue and so I have to be careful with every penny.
The only local option we have in our area is incredibly expensive and the quality isn't all that good. I like buying things locally, so I truly wish we had a realistic option for that.

(15,220 posts)Yes, I run a rescue for old and unadoptable cats. It's actually become a "sanctuary" more than a "rescue" at this stage. Been doing it for years and we have so many that we aren't taking in any new ones. We stopped intake about 3 years ago because we realized we had to give our resources and attention to the ones already on premises. Blessedly, many of them have lived longer than was expected when they first came to us. We provide as good a life as we can for those in our care, including good vet care.
We still do TNR. I will spay/neuter anything that crosses my path because I truly believe THAT is the only way to achieve a world where fewer are killed because there are not enough homes.
It can be the most fulfilling part of my life, and it can be the saddest part of my life at the same time. But I would not change a thing!

(9,474 posts)and she has an arrangement with our local Walmart-they donate damaged bags of pet food to her. It's a financial godsend. You might want to check with your Walmart if you haven't already.

(15,220 posts)I know that many businesses do give damaged bags for rescue groups, and we count ourselves as lucky at this moment in time that we have been able to pay our own expenses. That may change soon as I will be losing a good job at the end of this year.
We've always tried not to take anything offered that might benefit a more needy group, but our group may be the needy one soon, and it is good to know that some businesses do try to give back a little. Tell your niece I send my thanks to ANYONE who is helping homeless dogs and cats!

(9,069 posts)I had to stop using Chewy in February because my last kitty passed away. When I cancelled my account, Chewy sent me a condolences card signed by a bunch of staff. It was incredibly considerate and sweet. I told them I would be back and I'm hoping to get a new kitty in the next week or two. I'm bummed. I really loved their service and kindness. It would be good if Petsmart would keep Chewy as an offshoot.

(9,069 posts)He and his family foster cats here in Los Angeles. I can't remember the name of the organization they work with but he had 5 kittens just before I had to leave town a couple of weeks ago. I was so excited to talk to him yesterday when I got back but it was his day off.
I told him to not reserve any kittens if there are homes waiting for them. Luckily and as he said... it's kitten season!!

(9,069 posts)our building until the owners closed up the passages.
I found homes for all but my last cat - the one that passed in February. She was feral but I domesticated her - she never got rid of her innate desire to attack me at random moments but the amount of effort I put in and getting her love back was immensely rewarding. Losing her was really tough because of that bond. I thought I would take a year off but that's just not me. I like having critters around.

(12,265 posts)We spend about 2000 a year with them. No more. I will go to our locally owned store from now on.
