Its a shame that this day is celebrated by so many with the excuse they are celebrating their heritage and it has nothing to do with slavery. Well I'm here to tell you that's a crock of shit (I have two racist brothers proof positive of what I just said).
We live in lee County Florida (Yes the County is named after Robert E. Lee). This monument is in downtown Fort Myers.
I only bring this up because it sickens me to know that many people are still proud of this and have a day to celebrate it. I celebrate it knowing that good won over evil.
Until we get rid of all these hateful "holiday's" & monuments & statues racism will be alive & well in this Country of ours.
I would even like to see the County I live in have it's name changed.
So to all of you Confederate flag waving racists assholes that say it has nothing to do with slavery and only your heritage, get this through your thick skull, they are one in the same.
Y'all have a nice day now.

(13,903 posts)We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable.
That in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations; while the destruction of the existing relations between the two races, as advocated by our sectional enemies, would bring inevitable calamities upon both and desolation upon the fifteen slave-holding States.

(82,849 posts)In a thread bruiting about a "hate vs. heritage" discussion, another DUer (sadly lost to posterity or my swiss cheese memory) posted (minor paraphrase, but you get the idea), "My great-great-grandfather was a member of the 133rd Indiana Irregulars, so it's my family's heritage to shoot any traitorous sumbitches flying that confederate rag in my beloved United States."

(790 posts)Had a ancestor die in Gettysburg & 3 of them wounded badly in Antietam . All members of Corp.1 2nd Brigade 97th NY. Regiment. All the plantation owners & the political, Military hierarchy should have had all their wealth stripped & given to the freed slaves , the wounded union veterans, and the families of the dead union soldiers. As well as trials for treason with the jury made up of these victims.

(7,670 posts)A couple years ago a committee organized by Mayor Slay recommended removal. It has yet to be done.
As far as I know, it still stands, may be removed soon though, hopefully.
