(776 posts)Let's say a woman is progressive in every way other then she is prolife, and l know a lot of people like that growing up in southern Illinois. She knows the score and what the party's view is on abortion but she accepts it and votes democratic anyway. Shouldn't we as Americans at least respect that she has her own personal opinion? Or should we chastise her and tell her she isn't wanted here and take her vote elsewhere?

(91,004 posts)...WILL FORCE YOU TO HAVE ONE.
The essence of the Democratic Party Platform is this: abortion, contraception, prenatal and postnatal care ARE ALL PART OF WOMEN'S NECESSARY HEALTH CARE CONTINUUM. The availability and affordability of all of these elements are a necessity in a democratic society. Some women undoubtedly want or need none of the above, but they must be available. Men's lack of a uterus is totally irrelevant to this particular discussion.
That is the agreement. There is no blame attached to holding a different point of view due to religious or other personal reasons, as long as you agree that others have the legal right to choose differently.
Or put another way: I choose to not marry another woman, but I don't have the right to forbid other women from choosing differently.

(776 posts)but what I'm saying is should we sit there and wag our fingers in front of her face while she continues to support us? Probably pros and cons for both scenarios

(36,225 posts)She can do as she pleases... that is what choice is.
That is what we fight for.
For her to also do as she pleases.

(776 posts)even right here on du over the years. I just think it's more of one of those agree to disagree issues and instead of respectfully being able to disagree l see lot of people want to jump on pro-life dems. I don't understand them but they are still a large voting block

(776 posts)Im trying to talk strategy here. Not sure what you are reading between the lines?

(776 posts)And that's exactly what I'm asking. Should we just tell her sorry you're in the wrong place or should we say look we are just gonna have to respectfully disagree on this and move on. Thanks for voting democratic
boston bean
(36,225 posts)people who are personally against abortion but don't judge or vote along the lines for restricting access to abortion for others are by definition pro choice.

(4,552 posts)Anyone, and I do mean ANYONE, is free to cast his or her vote for Democrats. And I thank anyone who does! They can hold whatever personal beliefs they wish.
Democratic candidates, however, are, or SHOULD be, expected to adhere to the party platform. Likewise, Democrats should not be officially endorsing candidates who are at odds with Democratic positions, especially on something as important as this.
IMHO.

(776 posts)we will never be able to win certain parts of the country. Trust me, just not gonna happen. So I guess it comes down to are we willing to throw away large chunks of the country by being so rabid on certain issues. I really don't have the answer
Silver Gaia
(4,552 posts)We don't need the entire country. We just need a majority--free of hacking, voter suppression, etc. (We already DO have the majority, but we are being attacked via the methods I mentioned, and others.) I do not see the point in going against our core values, and do not/will not support it. (Do Republicans do that? Not that I've seen.)
askyagerz
(776 posts)Between basic women's rights and abortion and that is their core value. I have seen plenty of prolife dems being attacked by other dems. Just not sure if it's a good long term strategy. You may think having just enough votes to squeak by is good enough but I would feel better if we had as many votes as possible. There is definitely a balance somewhere between our core values and getting as many votes as we can.

(4,552 posts)Compromise on THIS issue is non-negotiable. Done.

(24,646 posts)and her right to make her own decisions regarding her health? Well, while we are at it, do you want to let in some candidates who think slavery is great and want to take us back there? That might win big in certain parts of the country.
askyagerz
(776 posts)And if I was a pro-life dem here then the whole fact that this post even came up im sure would look like finger wagging. Just saying we might have to respectfully disagree sometime or we just might see a third party rise up and Ted Nugent will be our next prez

(36,119 posts)FFS!
Why does she need to be coddled?
If she's willing to VOTE for a pro choice platform and candidate, then she should just do it and SHUT UP about her personal opinions.
No one cares, she doesn't need to 'share'

(776 posts)People are products of their environments. Some people just will never be able to shake this prolife view

(24,646 posts)to HAVE an abortion? That is insane and straight out of a rw playbook.
askyagerz
(776 posts)Her core belief because she believes in the rest of our platform and votes democratic. Come on DU to talk about environmental issues and sees a post about the party platform of prochoice on the homepage. Yes I could see where she would feel intimidated to be here and maybe decide not to vote for us anymore. Pretty sure the only reason to even post that was for the pro-life people here
