Strange that such an erudite and thoughtful person chose to ignore the obvious venality behind the Iraq invasion. But always interesting, as you say.
His defense of his friend Stephen Fry's life and morality here, in a debate in front of representatives of the Catholic Church, was a moment of pure clarity and beauty.

I never really understood why he went off the rails over something as illogical and evil as IWR

(11,257 posts)I guess we all have our filters. he was fond of making the point that he had actually been in Iraq and seen the suffering of the people and the cruelty and brutality of the regime. But putting himself on the side of Cheney and Rumsfeld and Bush seemed to me like a gross miscalculation.

reminds me of all these idiotic Trump voters thinking Trump was for the "working man", all evidence to the contrary
