is that Sanders is trashing the most respected President of our time.
I have issues with our "Democratic Outreach Person" trashing our former President. How does this heal the country? It does not, it divides. Obama is no longer in public office he can take any speaking tours he wishes. Word. Bernie, you are on every talk show promoting yours and your book. Pot kettle??????

(37,648 posts)I'm wondering if the immense national fame and money he's gotten from the campaign has gone to his head? It happens to many good people. In fact, I thought I saw a bit of that during the campaign, but wasn't sure.
In any case, what happens after a national campaign is that the final candidates are catapulted into national fame, and money starts raining all around them. After all these years, Bernie became a household name and has been showered with money (he bought some new digs).
There's nothing wrong with money. That's one of the goals in most people's lives. But it can go to a person's head.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with a former President getting rich. It's a natural consequence of being one of a few in a group of very select men in the country, and a former President. Good for him and all the other Presidents who did the same thing.

Edie Lutnick is the author of An Unbroken Bond: The Untold Story of How the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald Families Faced the Tragedy of 9/11 and Beyond. All the proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund and the charities it assists.[18]
The Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund provided $10 million to families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Howard Lutnick and the Relief Fund "adopted" 19 elementary schools in impacted areas, distributing $1,000 prepaid debit cards to each family from the schools.[19] In total $10 million in funds were given to families affected by the storm.[20]
Two days after the 2013 Moore tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma, killing 24 people and injuring hundreds, Howard Lutnick pledged to donate $2 million to families affected by the tornado. The donation was given out in the form of $1,000 debit cards given out to area families.[21][22]
Each year, on September 11, Cantor Fitzgerald and its affiliate BGC Partners donate 100% of their revenue to charitable causes on their annual Charity Day which was originally established to raise money to assist the families of Cantor employees who died in the World Trade Center attacks.[23] Since its inception, Charity Day has raised $110 million for charities globally.[24]

(10,200 posts)A Facebook post that clearly articulates my thoughts on this, from writer and publicist Leslie Hermelin:
You guys do remember why we all know the name Cantor Fitzgerald right? (They're the "corrupt" Wall Street folks who paid Obama to speak to this week). I do. I remember. As an American living in NYC when the towers came down I made a promise to Never Forget. I remember Cantor Fitzgerald was the firm that took the most losses of all Trade Center tenants 9/11 - the plane literally crashed into their floor.
I remember the heartbreaking interviews with their CEO that followed in the aftermath. He was late that day and one of the only ones who survived. He was late AND HE LIVED bc he was taking his son to his first day of kindergarten. Did you know he gave the victims families 25% of all profits for 5 years and covered their health insurance for 10? Did you know he still has nightmares. Yeah what a corporate asshole.
Seriously if you're mad Obama spoke to this team then fuck you forever. You're the asshole.
I don't just remember the name Cantor Fitzgerald bc they're in the news this week due to a bunch of faux progressives who can't think more complex thoughts than "WALL STREET BAD MUST KILL WALL STREET".
I remember their name because in the aftermath of these events as a nascent NYC resident (I moved here Aug 2000) this man speaking about his pain and the loss suffered in news interviews following is seared into my soul. I love that he paid Obama to bring his wisdom to the people who work for him. I love that he lived.
If you think this guy and Obama are the enemy and you define yourself as a liberal progressive you're a liar and a sham.

(14,573 posts)Yet another thread trashing Bernie.
Bernie did criticize several of Obama's positions, as did I. In particular his drone policies and the secrecy in which the TPP was negotiated, with the democracy-killing ISDS provisions. Those things didn't work for me, sheshe. Yet, I did love Obama and genuinely believe he will go down in history as a great president. And a great man.
Just like FDR, who of course merited criticism because of his slowness in even acknowledging the injustice of Jim Crow and segregation. Yet FDR, too, was a great president and a great man.
Bernie isn't perfect either. But I sure do like his policies. And did you see Warren on Bill Maher last night? What a firebrand! Would that she will run in 2020! I'll hit the streets, cane and all, in her support!
It is my considered opinion (and yes I have a right to it, same as you do to yours) that we need to keep pounding at the economic justice these two are talking about. The meme that social justice is more important than economic justice is just right wing garbage designed to divide us. If our government, which supposedly is a government of, by and for the people, actually used our tax money for programs that benefit Americans by rebuilding our infrastructure, investing in the education of our children and grandchildren, preserving freedom of choice for women, enacting laws that support equal pay for equal work, expanding Social Security and implementing Medicare for all Americans instead of where it goes now, which is to line corporate coffers, then we'd all be better off.
Because the overwhelming majority of us can ALL get behind those things.
Then, when we get the progressives in power, we can overturn Citizens United, get corporate money out of politics, reenact the Fairness Doctrine, and begin pounding on social justice when we can actually get the word out without it being ignored - because the teeth of Fox news and hate-talk radio will be pulled.
Oh, well...are we smart enough to accomplish this? Do we have the political guts? Do we as a people have the perseverance to actually dig for the facts, and find out the truth about stuff so that a better decision at the polls can be made?
Nah.
Long sigh.

Now before you go off on oligarchs and wall street, please research Cantor Fitzgerald, their is plenty of info about them in this thread.
