(7,963 posts)They are easily led with cheap kneejerking emotional pleas to their fear and ego. They love "rah rah USA" and their guns. We need to approach everything in that manner.

(1,753 posts)The task is to get Democrats to support the Democratic candidate.
I will continue to express to Trump voters my disdain for Trump, the fact hes a failed president, and continue to provide proof to Trump voters that Trump is comprehensively wrong on the issues - as are they.

(45,806 posts)done by themselves when the coal miners realize the coal mining jobs aren't coming back. The steel workers won't ever see those plants open again. There will be no wall. Whatever health care bill they comp up with will not be cheaper, and better than the ACA. I do believe there are some Con voters who will realize the Con campaign promises were all BS will leave the Con when it finally hits them.
WE CANNOT SAY OR DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE THEIR MINDS!

(5,272 posts)not a move away from that.
The question is what facts are we trading in? Are we just trying to say "see!, what a shitty guy!" or "see these are the real numbers, and those are all lies..." or are we trying to get them to imagine better things for themselves, and to show them concretely how a certain thing is hurting them right now? The facts that will resonate are the ones that offer a better life in an easy to contemplate way, and will show in detail, how things Trump or the GOP are doing, are literally hurting the people we are talking to.
Of course they're going to be deaf to the other facts, but they'll have a harder time sticking their fingers in their ears when we talk about the specific things that are affecting them in the very moment, changes that are hurting them right now, or are about to. Sure, that won't work for everyone, but it will work for some of them. I didn't hear any love for McConnell in that town hall Sanders had. The socialist was getting love, and McConnell was dog-shit, because that's the work that was being done.

(72 posts)Or Hillary. One day people have to accept that they aren't like us, they don't think like us, it's above thier ability. They operate at a lower level of awareness. They can't be reasoned with no more so than A hungry wolf can have a bone reasoned away.
Doesn't mean they have to be treated with disrespect it just means they are mentally deficiant and need treated accordingly. Lie to them that's what they want. They can't accept reality.

(5,272 posts)human needs, and the ways they are achieving them isn't rocket science. but if you notice, I went specifically for arguments aimed at the id, or limbic system...the most obvious things that have clear and present effects, either in the negative or positive...things that they can feel today compared to just a short time ago...things they could want today that we could get them to start demanding for tomorrow. This is working on that most self-preserving/greed level, for that very reason. Get them to see their stake in something, like a wolf with a bone.
And you do this because while all of the higher thinking IS there--I don't agree that it isn't--it is all working in the service of acceptance in their communities(which is also livelihood and survival), and making sure they feel safe and secure in the narrative they've constructed and had constructed for themselves, and making sure, in-spite of shitty things they may have done or thought, that they avoid massive cognitive dissonance at the hands of a different set of facts, or humanizing elements that would make their behavior and thinking wrong. In other words protecting their egos and sense of self.

(72 posts)Ask Kerry and Hillary how it worked out. If people like seeing democrats lose keep thinking the way you do. I don't mean that as an insult, it's just tiresome after all these years. I don't arguing with y fellow democrats. But trying to reach wing nuts and appeal to anything other than thier deep rooted fears and suspicions is a fools errand. Trump knows this and trump won.

(15,315 posts)Almost everyone to some degree or another has some things they believe are true, and a mere relating of the facts won't sway them. Biases are a hell of a thing because we aren't aware we have them. That's not to say that no Trump voter ever can be persuaded, but voters who have a more personal, identity-based reason for their votes will be tough nuts to crack.

(5,272 posts)"yesterday you had health care...today you don't and you know why..." are far more powerful ways to crack that nut. "Today you don't have this specific benefit, but what if you had it, literally tomorrow"...etc. There is absolutely loss avoidance involved in not wanting to evolve, so this wouldn't work blanketly for everyone, but I would work for some.

(5,499 posts)For some voters, the person with the personalty that captures moment is what drives their vote. I think if we go back to 1980 and the explosion of cable, we'll see that personality was the determing factor. So when we put our lists of potential 2020 candidates, personality has to be a factor.

(1,148 posts)And how many Trump supporters are open to hearing facts, I dunno..
Sadly, I think a lot of them are authoritarians, they are used to authoritarian religion, which promotes the idea that you do what the leader tells you to do. They're too in love with authority. If the authority fails and makes an ass out of himself, which he is doing, then maybe some of the followers will look for "facts" elsewhere.
The spell has to be broken for them to change their minds.
