My Senator Lamar Alexander is on the committee to look at the House healthcare bill.

I sent him an email (I cannot speak calmly to him or his office). We have had previous exchanges on other subjects. I was extremely polite but I made a few points for him to consider. My first was that there are no women on this committee, I stated that I had never thought of him as a misogynist but if he did not immediately speak up about it, well....he would make him look guilty.

I shared my years of experience working as an RN at the hospital in his home town. I shared my gratitude for the health insurance I had for my breast cancer treatment.

It seems to me that so many other countries have payment for healthcare figured out and it makes no sense that we cannot.

I also shared that if we really believed in "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". we should also believe that none of those are possible without believing that access to healthcare we can afford is a RIGHT.

I do not expect him to agree with me, but I had my say.

I did not threaten to work against him if he chose to run again, that is the best I could do.

but you might be interested in this, from an e-mail I received today:
"From Moral Movement Tennessee:
Greeting family! As we know with the AHCA, Alexander is critical as chairman of the Senate Health Committee and a leading member of the AHCA 'working group.'
This action will come from the position of offering counsel for the decision ahead.

WHEN AND WHERE:
Tuesday, May 9
2 pm
Offices of Senators Alexander and Corker
3322 West End Avenue, Nashville

We adamantly stand against the AHCA and need to stress the importance of Medicaid Expansion/ protections for those with pre-existing conditions. The action is to have a pray-in inside of his local office while he is in town. Faith leaders are invited to share sacred texts and stories of those on the ACA.

**In addition, we need you to create a sign-on list for individuals to add their names and/or the names of loved ones who are on the ACA or whose health care is at risk (You can also add people to the list without their signature). At the top of each page, write: "As those who risk losing our healthcare access, with pre-existing conditions, and in the coverage gap we are concerned by the unmerciful and un-American Health Care Act." We will attach the papers to create a scroll for the Senator's door.

And as you know, the AHCA:

* Causes 24 million people to lose coverage: 1 in 10 non-elderly people who would otherwise have insurance would lose it.

* Effectively ends the ACA Medicaid expansion.

* Cuts $880 billion from Medicaid over 10 years, with most of the savings going to wealthy people and insurance, pharmaceutical, and other corporations.

* Increases premiums and deductibles for marketplace consumers, with total out-of-pocket costs increasing by an average of $3,600 - and far more for older people, lower-income people, and people in high-cost states.

And enriches the richest of the rich through tax cuts.

We are focused and we will persevere.

We didn't get this far without YOU. You Are Awesome!

So few of us around, but more than I realized.

As soon as I recover from another knee surgery, I hope to get a little more politically active.

Went to Townsend last week and had not driven through Walland in awhile (also pretty), the scars from the Three Sisters Fire still pretty vivid.
