Robots have become a hot topic in the discussion about the transformation of healthcare towards digital health. Last week, Richard Susskind and Daniel Susskind published a thought provoking article in Harvard Business Review stating that technology will replace many doctors, lawyers, and other health professionals. The authors had interviewed 100 leaders in the field of health, law, accounting, journalism, etc., and concluded that many simple job functions will be overtaken by automation and technology.
Bradley Merrill Thompson, head of the Clinical Decision Support Software Coalition, took this a step further in a VentureBeat op-ed criticizing the FDA's 5-year delay on automated medicine and declaring that just as cars are beginning to drive themselves, healthcare decision-making is facing its own automation ramp up. Soon, patients will be able to enter their current symptoms through a portal, with the help of an intelligent agent, and get an accurate diagnosis or prescription without involving a human doctor.
I am convinced that technology will play an increasingly important role in medicine and healthcare in years to come. We can't even imagine the impact of robots, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in medical discovery and patient care in the future.
However, I don't believe that machines and robots will replace doctors completely.
