The first thing you need to know about newly appointed special prosecutor Robert S. Mueller III is that he is not safe from being fired by President Donald Trump.
Trump can order Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to fire Mueller, and if Rosenstein refuses, Trump can fire him and others down the line in the Attorney Generals office until the president finds a prosecutor willing to carry out his firing order. Trump doesnt have to give a reason.
Thats exactly what happened when special prosecutor Archibald Cox was appointed to investigate President Richard Nixon: the president successfully ordered the Justice Department to fire Cox.
But if Mueller is not fired and theres no immediate indication that he will be he has the same broad powers that a regular federal prosecutor does, plus additional independence.
He is officially called special counsel, but he has the power to subpoena records and witnesses, convene a grand jury, seek a criminal indictment, go to trial, and seek a conviction and prison terms for individuals charged with federal crimes.

Fine. Let's play it out Watergate-style and have it end Watergate-style. SOON.

(798 posts)I don't want Trump pardoned; I want him at least tried and if guilty, convicted and sent to prison.
This is what we have to do as a country. No more "slaps on the wrists" and letting GOP continue to get away with stealing elections by any means necessary.

(12,595 posts)unless he wants to. The Buffoon doesn't care what people think, as soon as he realizes he can fire - and continue to fire - anybody that has the gall to investigate him.
I just wonder what the Republicans will do in this case.

Picked by Trump's DoJ and well known for running a tight ship. This disappears from the news for 6 months (no leaks), he comes back with a vaguely worded wrist slap or charges against Flynn (and maybe another scapegoat or two) and Trump keeps going.
If anything does make the news, Trump will take to Twitter and make vaguely negative comments about it to keep up appearances. But the fix is in, this is Trump's own picked man to run the investigation.
