FCC votes to advance net neutrality repeal
By Ali Breland and Harper Neidig - 05/18/17 12:10 PM EDT
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pais plan to roll back net neutrality took its first step forward on Thursday.
The commission voted 2-1 along party lines to advance Pais Restoring Internet Freedom proposal, which would repeal current net neutrality protections.
Thursday's vote opens a period of public input before the agency advances the proposal.
The FCCs formal decision to consider the proposal did not come without resistance. The commissions lone Democrat, Mignon Clyburn, harshly criticized the proposal and activists braved the heat to protest outside FCC headquarters.
Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, applauded the move and called for Democrats to come to the table to work out a legislative compromise on the issue.
In politics, it is rare to get a second chance at bipartisan compromise, yet right now we have an opportunity to accomplish what eluded us two years agoclear and certain rules in statute to protect the open internet, he said on the Senate floor ahead of the commission's vote.

My own television plays movies, that's all it does, DVDs and SD Netflix.
No cable, no satellite, no broadcast.
I have a medium speed dsl connection to an independent ISP and that's it.
I don't expect everyone to be so bold, but even those who have no other options but a scummy ISP like COMCAST can make their complaints known and demonstrate their resolve by refusing bundled subscription television models.
I'll be damned if Fox News and their ilk get a dime from me just because they're part of some cable television bundle that's 90% propaganda, boner pill commercials, and other fuckwittery.
