Melania is from Slovenia which is one of the nations that were once part of Yugoslavia.

Slovenia was the most modern and Western (geographically and in culture) part of the former Yugoslavia.

Yugoslavia was communist but a non-aligned nation that was not part of the Warsaw pact during the Cold War.

Slovenian the language is from a different language family from Russian.

Melania gained her own celebrity as a Western European model that came to the USA,

Melania is a materialistic person and a gold digger that married Trump but there is zero chance that she is a "gift from Putin".

That is ludicrous.

She is a gold digger and used her looks to get money and celebrity and to marry Donald Trump.

Melania made her situation and to her benefit and I do not feel sorry for her and also believe she is an entitled jerk.

But she didn't come gift wrapped from Putin and left behind the communist system for excesses of the West even before meeting Trump.

Otherwise I agree 100% with you.

"gold-digger". It specifically refers to a woman who marries for money. It perpetuates the idea that women are shallow and self-centered. There are other ways do criticize Melania Trump without resorting to that word. Even just saying that Melania married Trump for his money is better than calling her a "gold-digger" because the former is a statement about a specific person, and the latter is a stereotype that damages women in general.

Too many people are shallow and self-centered.

Both Donald and Melania Trump appear shallow and self-centered.

Maybe reflexively blaming everything on Putin and Russia is also not always that productive not accurate?

Saying Melania was a "gift" from one man to another is also a stereotype that damages to women in general.

However, Melania is the type of women who finds ways to benefit from a patriarchal system.

I agree with all the points you have made. And thank you for understanding.

The women who think they're playing the patriarchy for their own benefit are kidding themselves. In the end, no amount of money can give one even a fraction of the pleasure of sharing one's life with someone one can talk to and trust.

ETA: Someone else on another thread just said they thought it's possible Melania really fell for Donald at one time. It's indeed possible; narcissists can seem very likable in the early days of a relationship. Self-confidence is extremely attractive, and they seem to have an unlimited supply. We'll never really know Melania's innermost thoughts, so perhaps it's best to give her the benefit of the doubt?

Since when? Russian is a Slavic language. Slovenian is a Slavic language.

I've been to Slovenia, if only briefly. To those people who didn't understand German or Italian, I tried my Russian, and we were able to communicate on a rudimentary basis. Like French and Portuguese, both Latin languages, they are by no means mutually intelligible like the Scandinavian languages, but they ARE from the same family.

The rest may be true, but the linguistic info is 180°

Map of Slavic languages:

I spent two plus weeks in Yugoslavia in 1981, not that long after Tito died. It was an interesting trip in that my exe and I visited two college friends, a couple, from Cal. One was a Cal PhD archeologist doing dissertation fieldwork in Yugoslavia and the other was a Cal Phd Linguist then writing her dissertation whi is now a full professor at the University of Toronto. The archeologist had lived with his parents in Yugoslavia growing up as the father was with State Department in Yugoslavia and in 1981 was with State Department in Romania. So both has residency and spoke Serbo-Croatian fluently and the linguist noted the differences in the various dialects (her PhD work was about the Francophone-Anglophone issues in Canada, she is a French Jew born in Mexico city and raised in Quebec,

Yugoslavia was nothing like expected and I am disappointed never to have returned after all these years. We traveled into Yugoslavia from Greece by train and had a car for two weeks. We took a final road trip from Belgrade to Dubrovnik and then up to Split where our "local" friends flew back to Belgrade. We traveled the coast as far as Opatija, Croatia (for Eastern Orthodox Easter) then traveled to Ljubljana, Slovenia. We visited some incredible karst caves in Slovenia and left the car - Zastava 101 - in Ljubljana and went by bus through the Dolomite Alps and into Trieste.

Beautiful part of the world and the people were very friendly. The only other "tourists" we met were there was a tour group of Russians at the hotel where we stayed in Dubrovnik.

I am obviously not a linguist but Slovenian and Russian are on different branches of the Slavic language tree.

My friends could speak Serbo-Croatian fluently and converse readily where we went in Yugoslavia but could not speak with the Russian tourists in Dubrovnik. They did not travel with us to Slovenia but went back to Belgrade.

He knows how Ford got treated and depicted in the media after his well documented stumbles. So, of course, stairs and steps are fraught with possibilities of a misstep. Plus, at 70 going on 71, his balance issues might be undermining his confidence to navigate the steps without a trip or fall. Now that would be YouTube gold! tRump falling from the top of those steps from AF1 all the way to the tarmac! Kerrr-splat!!

Melania is clearly telegraphing how she really feels about tRump. Remember how we all KNEW that the Obama's had a real relationship and truly loved each other?? Well, Melanie's closely guarded secret is oozing out her pores. She detests tRump, wants nothing to do with him, except maybe his money and the child she had with him. I agree with others who have said she probably is trapped by tRump with threats and manipulation if she leaves him. It doesn't take a psychiatrist to figure out he controls her (or tries to) like he does everyone else...through fear and intimidation.

Maybe she is squirreling away some money and property and one day will walk away. In the meantime, she has provided some much needed comic relief with her rebuffs to his overtures of "affection".

Melania is a gold-digging ho' who -- went she hopped into bed with Trump -- figured she was on Easy Street. She'd marry this old fart, make certain he puts here in the will, fakes delight when he bangs her, have one kid for him, then watch the old guy die after which she would bag up her millions and marry some younger rich guy who treats her right. She didn't realize she was marrying an abusive, philandering, self-centered, ignorant POS.

And now he has forced her into the public eye where she clearly did not and does not want to be.

No wonder she's pissed. It didn't work out too well . . . she'll still inherit a boatload of money but now she'll have to endure the presidency to get it.

If she didn't realize this before marrying him, she didn't do her due diligence. Yeah, I know many narcissists can turn on the charm when it suits them, but the whole Ivana/Marla thing played out in the press, much to Trump's delight.
No sympathy from me for marrying the loudmouth buffoon.

I agree that it doesn't seem like politics and being first lady is/was ever part of what she signed on for, though.

She was graceful when she did it, as if she has a catalog of ways to avoid touching that spiritual leper. Especially after that whole hands on the glowing orb thing. Maybe it WAS magic. Maybe she's seeing him and herself clearly now & will never let him touch her again.

She had to marry him and despises him. If it weren't for her son, and I'm sure Trump's threats to take him away from her, she would probably stay as far away from that man as possible. Imagine that sweaty orange idiot on top of you - there really isn't enough money in the world that would make most people tolerate that.

Trumpykins has never been known for his fidelity and power is supposed to up the attractiveness factor. I should not have eaten before I wrote that. To me, Trump has no redeeming qualities and is not attractive in the least. However, mom always said there's a lid for every pot.

He did something that hurt their son. That would explain it too. Sadly, I can see Trump being cruel to an 11 year old.
