But the only way that they will be able to achieve the status of the "nouveau riche" is to inherit it from their robber-baron families, which they do not have.

They hate "professionals" and their book learning and their "PC behavior" they don't want to grow or change, they've doubled down in their ignorance and think their heritage and their innate superiority are enough to grant them dominance- as it has for centuries.

4. This started in earnest under Reagan

Carter had challenged the United States to grow to its potential, to lead the change into a new world of cooperation and common goals with peace and prosperity for everyone through sharing. Reagan came in and basically said that we shouldn't and wouldn't apologize for being the best. I remember as a kid watching some of the first conservative fools like Wally George in Southern California and thinking, "that is ridiculous" with the "USA! USA! I remember being afraid of nuclear war because of the tension that Reagan ratcheted up with the Soviet Union. I remember the yuppies with the "conspicuous consumption" and the junk bonds, and Wall St. with the Godon Geckos of the world thinking that "greed is good". Those are the precursors of today's conservatives who wanted to be the alphas but never got there so they are mad at everyone, but only willing to take it out on those they perceive as powerless.
