I think that part of tRump's motivation is this:

Any attention is better than no attention.

Everything he does is to keep the spotlight on him. I don't think he cares if it's positive or negative, just as long as he gets it. Of course, positive attention is the BEST.

He's like a bad little kid in this. We've all known them. Some folks never grow up or out of this phase.

He does things that a lot of people think are really bad because they put him in the spotlight - a whole lot more than doing things that are mostly accepted or approved of. The bratty kid breaks things or has tantrums or hits other kids because he wants attention - same with President Arrested Development. Another reason, I think, is that he wants to wipe out *everything* President Obama did, regardless of what it is or who it benefits. And he also just likes being a dick because it makes him feel like a manly man.

One of the big motivations is distraction. He is in deep shit over the Russia investigations. Backing out of the Paris Agreement takes the focus off that a little bit. If this is not enough, he will do something else to distract.
