Newt Gingrich, says that Estonia is in the suburbs of St. Petersburg,

TO DIE FOR ESTONIA
By Charles Krauthammer Opinion writer June 1 at 7:30 PM

"One of Trump’s top outside advisers, Newt Gingrich, says that “Estonia is in the suburbs of St. Petersburg,” as if Russian designs on the Baltic states are not at all unreasonable."

SNIP.....................................

"Leaders therefore do everything they can to bolster it(deterrence). Install tripwires, for example. During the Cold War, we stationed troops in Germany to face the massive tank armies of Soviet Russia. Today we have 28,000 troops in South Korea, 12,000 near the demilitarized zone.

Why? Not to repel invasion. They couldn’t. They’re not strong enough. To put it very coldly, they’re there to die. They’re a deliberate message to the enemy that if you invade our ally, you will have to kill a lot of Americans first. Which will galvanize us into full-scale war against you.

His omission was all the more damaging because of his personal history. This is a man chronically disdainful of NATO. He campaigned on its obsolescence. His inaugural address denounced American allies as cunning parasites living off American wealth and generosity. One of Trump’s top outside advisers, Newt Gingrich, says that “Estonia is in the suburbs of St. Petersburg,” as if Russian designs on the Baltic states are not at all unreasonable.

Moreover, Trump devoted much of his Brussels speech, the highlight of his first presidential trip to NATO, to berating the allies for not paying their fair share. Nothing particularly wrong with that, or new — half a century ago Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield was so offended by NATO free riding that he called for major reductions of U.S. troops in Europe."

He can be clever at manipulating people but his end goals are never the intelligent choice for people.

I tend to think people not so intelligent when their words/actions, no matter how cleverly worded or done, cause more harm than good.

I'm sure they pat themselves on the back though.

"Estonians over the age of 25 remember well that their country was actually ruled by Moscow during 50 years of occupation by the Soviet Union. It all ended in 1990"

An interesting interview with President Kersti Kaljulaid of Estonia.

Knowing several Estonian musicians, as I mentioned, you are absolutely right.
Another of my acquaintances , a Finnish conductor, frequently takes the ALLEGRO between Helsinki and SP, and the ferry to Tallinn. He is not in a good mood about all this...But he also is very aware of American 'Imperialism,' much more so than a vast majority of Americans, so we have interesting discussions..

Same for Latvians. Nervous.....One of the greatest chamber orchestras in the world is directed by a Latvian violinist and its members are mostly from the Baltic region.

I worry for all of them and their families...

He is not generally as huge of a lunatic as he has appeared to be lately, from going full on with the Seth Rich stuff to this.

Also, St. Petersburg is about 100 miles away from the border with Estonia (The border with Finland is about the same distance away - maybe they should be worried too).

See my reply #24 above to WINSTARS...

The Finns ARE worried....at least the few whom I know..
The last time the Russians invaded Finland it did not go well, at least in the beginning.

Of course, they then went back home and got reinforcements.. something like a couple million, and came back.and that was that.
