With an idiot like Trump in the White House and Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, things have been looking a little bleak since the 2016 election. However, we may get a reprieve that lasts long enough for us to get to the 2018 election and turn things around in Congress.
That reprieve will come, courtesy of the Judicial Branch of our federal government. Despite Trump getting a conservative new Justice on the Supreme Court, there are still plenty of decent, thoughtful judges in our federal district court system. We've already seen them at work on Trump's unconstitutional travel bans that target Middle-Eastern Muslims. Those district courts and Appeals Courts in those districts have said firmly, "Now, wait just a minute, there, Donald."
The Supreme Court is always loath to overturn decisions of the districts and their full panels. So, whenever The Donald does something stupid and unconstitutional, fast action by attorneys from the ACLU and other organizations can slow Donald's act down and even lower the curtain on his attempts to become the tyrant he always wanted to be.
We're going to have to count on those federal courts for a while yet. Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans seem to be unable to do much, since they're bickering among themselves about almost everything.
So, give a cheer to our Federal Judicial System. We're going to need their help for another 18 months or so. And please donate to the ACLU. We're going to need their attorneys to keep filing suit for us.

(146,307 posts)The Judicial Branch and the disorganization of congressional Republicans are about the only things keeping Trump from riding roughshod over the Constitution. We need to support our legal system as well as we can.

AS for the SCOTUS, I think I am seeing signs that the Roberts Court is beginning to contemplate their legacy and how history will treat them.
Here's hoping.

(146,307 posts)We need to reverse the trend in Congress in 2018, though. That's essential. If we fail to do that, we may not get another chance for a while.
