General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have a bad feeling about Comey's testimony.
He will not say anything damning.
We know he had a meeting with Mueller and it's speculated that this was to coordinate what he can say and what he cannot say as not to ruin Mueller's investigation.
Comey will hold back. And the mere fact that he doesn't send Trump to hell will be played up as a full exoneration of Trump. And lots of people will believe that spin.

(46,110 posts)Trump will get "the Hillary Treatment", whereby Comey will put on record just enough to create high suspicion and let dots be connected.

(18,837 posts)We're getting a flood of stories about how Trump has "cleared his schedule" during the scheduled time for the testimony, how he intends to "live tweet" and "fight back."
If Comey does exactly what you've described...and I believe he WILL...that's going to infuriate Trump MORE, because he's looking for a "big fight," something that (in his mind) might "end" this all on Thursday by discrediting Comey, and I don't see that happening AT ALL.
I think Comey will simply affirm that there is meat on these bones, that Trump absolutely needs to be investigated.
Note something I posted last week...Cornyn went on record as saying he believes the Senate investigation will be "wrapped up" by September. Trump would love that, and he'd love it even more if it happened earlier.
Life is what happens when you're making other plans.

Trumpy and the GOP are now beholden to Russia and Putin because the entire GOP leadership used their campaigns to launder Russian money. The DOJ knows it, Mueller knows it. This is also why the GOP is sitting on their thumbs and holding their collective breath. They're hoping for a miracle what will save their asses, but they underestimated Trumpy's severe craziness-- the craziness that will bring all of them down.

(18,837 posts)Comey's not going to be taking Trump down. He can't. He can offer testimony that is damaging, but I don't anticipate hearing anything new.
I am assuming that in terms of any bombshells or damaging evidence, that's something Comey gave Meuller in private, if at all.
He'll basically deny that he told Trump he was not under investigation, and that Trump asked him to give Flynn a pass.
And since we already know that, I'm not looking for a big "reveal."
I will be extremely surprised if Comey addresses anything that's not already in the 24/7 news cycle.
As frustrating as it is, the outcome of all of this is going to be worked out behind closed doors, not in a televised hearing.

(68,576 posts)He will say he never told Trump he was under investigation...and he will say Trump asked him to stop the investigation...that is enough. Comey is coming to fight back against Trump and would not come if he didn't have something to say...Trump is scared enough to run commercials...honestly, I never thought I would live to see a president attacking a private citizen in a commercial...disgraceful

(869 posts)What he will talk about is Trump's desire to silence him, and him feeling uncomfortable about being alone with Trump. He will not mention any hard evidence on Russia, which is now in Mueller's realm.
This is all my speculation. Nobody can predict the future.

(14,040 posts)because he already spoke about what, I assume will be the crux of Comey's testimony, the memo's on Twitter and with Lester Holt. Trump's need to Tweet and spin has screwed him out of invoking privilege--he shot himself in the foot on that.

(3,728 posts)Comey can only reveal so much. For me it's a matter of how forcefully he refutes trump's claim that Comey told him "three times" that he was not under investigation. And trump makes it sound like it was cut and dried back and white point blank questioning. It depends on how forcefully Comey refutes that and whether he leaves open the possibility that trump could have misinterpreted something.
Of course Comey could have stated "my dog has fleas" and trump would have interpreted that as "Oh so I'm not under investigation". And the deplorables would accept that.

(17,528 posts)the Dumpster he was not under investigation. What difference does that make?

(182,803 posts)No Comey will probably not directly say Trump obstructed but he probably will say Trump asked him about investigations. He may say that he was asked about his loyalty. The actual charge of obstruction is up to Mueller anyway.
Trump-Russia is already so established even non-political people I know make reference to it. A lot of people have come to consider him at least a beneficiary of Russian help. Oh and everyone thinks he's a joke.

The media and the country that drinks it all in is too damned obsessed with Reality TV mentality and scripting.

(26,060 posts)is that all the reporting shows that degenerate donnie and his minions are going to go to the mattresses against Comey - they are obviously scared witless about what he's going to say. Another thing is that Comey, from all the reporting, seems to be very protective of his reputation. Even as many Dems wanted his head on a platter, it was because of what was perceived as horrible judgement, not as a result of his integrity. Now he's facing someone who only wants to trash his 40 year reputation and I don't think he's going to lay down and let that happen without a fight.

(290 posts)I would caution you to step back and look at the big picture. The presence of a fired FBI head testifying regarding the conduct of the president who fired him is in and of itself damming.
Without a word Comey has Damned the president.

(22,037 posts)The big picture gets lost in the blur of the constant news cycle. Trump's presidency is a mess and his ignorance and malfeasance are exposed more and more every day. Additionally, Director Comey's testimony will have two parts: one public and one private. The closed-door hearing will be more detailed and Senators will learn just how dirty is this presidency.
Keep posting, Persisted!

Comey will not come out with his hair on fire. That hearing is not the place for it. He will remain calm. All he really has to do is confirm the contents of the memo.
Relax....

(6,324 posts)That all these anonymous leaks about his memos and Trump pressuring him and other damming leaks could be in part intentional disinformation fed to the press.
They know Comeny doesn't talk to the media.
They among the legitimate insert more damming details that are false.
President keeps harping his "fake news" accusations.
Comey testifies, they know he will be honest.
President now can claim victory over "fake news" and discredits his critics and the media.
I doubt they are smart enough to pull it off, but it's still a lingering fear in my mind.

(8,964 posts)I certainly don't anticipate theatrics, save whatever insane tweets Trump proceeds to throw into his carnival barking sideshow. Comey won't sensationalize, or offer judgment, or opine on obstruction of justice, but he also won't be aiding and abetting a cover up. He's not one likely to be put under oath and proceed to fabricate or omit events in order to save Trump's ass. But he will likely take a stylistically understated approach to the proceedings. If there is anything revealing or heretofore unknown in Comey's testimony, Mueller will be the one taking it to the next level.

(23,668 posts)First all the positivity about HRC's election. Big time disappointment.
Then every new revelation about trump and his family was supposed to be the nail in his coffin, he wouldn't last 100 days etc, still nope.
Then former acting AG Sally Yates' testimony was going to be the smoking gun.....nope.
So I don't get my expectation level up very high. It will be what it will be.
