Trump supporters have started arguing that following former FBI Director James Comeys testimony before Congress last Thursday, the services of Special Counsel Robert Mueller are no longer needed.
Theyre advancing two cases. The first is that because Comey confirmed last Thursday that Trump wasnt personally under investigation during the early weeks of his presidency before Comeys firing theres no good reason for Muellers investigation to continue. Ann Coulter encapsulated this line of reasoning in a tweet:

Coulters case overlooks the fact that investigations into the Trump campaign for possible collusion with Russia already involve some of Trumps closest confidantes and advisers. It also overlooks Comeys indication last Thursday that Muellers probe includes an investigation of Trump for possible obstruction of justice. So while Trump may no have been personally under investigation before, things have changed.
The second case is that Mueller is unfit to investigate anything related to Comey because the two have a personal relationship and a professional respect for each other. Conservative columnist Byron York summarized this case in his latest column a column shared on Twitter by Laura Ingraham, editor in chief of LifeZette, whos rumored to be in the mix for a communications job in the White House:

(12,448 posts)I'm old enough to remember Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre" when Archibald Cox was fired and the AG and Deputy AG resigned. Normally I'd say that after that complete cockup, no president would dare fire a Special Counsel investigating his or her administration. (Oh, how I long for "her"!) But, we're talking about Trump, so who the hell knows?

(51,590 posts)All the dems want one but the GOP in the House won't sign their bill for obvious reasons. Call Congress and pressure them or this BS will go on forever and this country will be destroyed while we wait. (202) 224-3121 and demand an Independent Investigation. MoveOn.org makes this week the BIG WEEK to call about this AND the Senate passing the House version of ACA repeal (McConnell IS doing it right now!). He has an 80% chance of passing it with newly written rules it won't even go to committee or the public!

(6,137 posts)potentially remove all evidence pertaining to this investigation. GOP is pushing congress to shut down this entirely. 2018 election might be jeopardy if voting integrity is not preserved.

(1,089 posts)in my opinion, but the positive of such a desperate move would be a shitstorm the likes of which those of us too young to remember the Saturday Night Massacre have never seen. The IC would only see their disgust with this POTUS intensified exponentially, and we'd see more incriminating info than ever before.
