The only reason Trump has not fired Mueller is that he has not yet figured out a way?

Since the Special Counsel is hired and fired by the Attorney General, and since Jeff Sessions recused himself on all things "Russian", then the job falls into the hands of the Deputy AG, Mr Rosenstein.

Mr Rosenstein is now the primary obstacle between Mueller staying on his job or Mr Rosensteing being fired? In that event, that a new Deputy AG was named, he would be the one to either keep Mueller on his job or to fire him, at the direction of the President.

So, it could be a time-consuming and convoluted process for Mr Trump to get rid of Robert Mueller.

Can anyone think of any other way the President could get rid of Mr Mueller?

Mr Sessions would still be recused from the Russian investigation?

That could be time-consuming and he would have to get a Deputy AG that would agree to fire Mueller as soon as he was approved for the job, in order to get rid of Mueller.

It is not a simple task.

3. Trump has only 3 appointees in DOJ

Sessions, Rosenstein and Rachel Brand. If he fires Rosenstein, that leaves Brand, who seems to be a qualified if very conservative appointee who Trump probably does not know well. Assuming she doesn't want to Bork her career, that leaves Obama holdovers, if any, and civil servants. He probably knows they won't do it. So he's been so slow to appoont people, he doesn't even have enough people for a decent massacre.

He knows that firing Mueller would be the proverbial wooden steak through the heart on himself. He need's "legitimate cause"... and doesn't have any despite schmucks like Hannity trying to manufacture one. If Mueller gets caught with something unsavory, then he has his chance....but only then.
