Rand Paul says it would have been a massacre

if Steve Scalise had not been there because his presence as someone in leadership required the presence of Capital police.

Members of Congress don't have any security detail.

I wonder if that is going to now change.

Also, only republicans present because republicans and democrats practice separately.

Scalise and 2 Capitol police were shot, all are in stable conditions.Shooter was outside field, using rifle

Rand said total number of shots from AR15 about 15 initially, then another 50 or 60 but only Scalise, a couple of his aides and the cops were out on field, rest were in dugouts

about guns after this? No one would have had a gun on them during practice.

On edit: I sincerely hope and pray that those that were shot recover quickly with no long term effects. And my apologies, I tend to think of several things at once, not just the shooting.

It's not that you wish ill upon them, but you'd like for them to walk in someone else's shoes for a change instead of making excuses about it being solely the fault of the gunman. Other nations don't have this problem. We do because the nra wanted to help gun sales.

Any Republicans will feel different about giving everybody a gun, even after this.

CNN currently has wall-to-wall coverage and is interviewing Mo Brooks (R-AL), who was a firsthand witness.

there is a need for increased security around all members of congress. Everything is just so out of control.

Republicans and the NRA bear much of the responsibility the level of gun violence in this country.

outside the Capitol for a work-related function, security should be present with them, leadership present or not.

How the fuck are the rest of us supposed to survive?

What about the "good guy" with a gun?

Police and security are the proper responses to violence, but we should work on preventing gun nuts taking rifles to city parks.

So Flake, big NRA supporter, didn't at first even feel endangered by this guy holding AR 15, says shooter looked about 40 and white

Just saw him interviewed on ABC news where he mentioned thinking about bird hunting as he glanced at shooter holding rifle
