...by a man with far-right sympathies, obsession with the "New World Order," and a history of sending hate mail to the Southern Poverty Law Center, how Republicans and the media were quick to deny any political motivation for his acts, describing him as merely an unbalanced individual who shouldn't be associated with his political affiliations?
This time around? Not so much...

I didn't hear it mentioned ONCE all day.

(2,795 posts)Getting shot, they'll do something about gun regulation.
For the most part it seems the angriest gun owners were conservatives/republicans - not gunning for republicans so no real reason for them to fear for their safety. But with easy access to guns and anger being stoked to a fevered pitch in this country, they might become targets. Eventually it all comes home to roost.

(4,291 posts)One of the Repuke snowflakes who was a bystander to this event said he wished he'd had a gun on him at the time.
I'll bet you half a peach that we're going to see some movement 💩 towards federal "Stand Yer Ground" legislation, which the NRA would be only-too-happy to draft, and then enthusiastically beat the war drum to pass.
And if (when) a recurrence of this kind of event happens, I would not want to be a LEO or other first responder on the scene, tasked with figuring out who's the hostile and who's the friendly.

(25,242 posts)Did Congress come together like they are talking today. We're all in this together. Dems & Repugs need to get along better.
Did the MSM talk about the protection of Congress people?
Did they say these things back then?

(42,700 posts)In fact, Boehner's statement about the Giffords shooting, which included the line "An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve" and Ryan's statement today, which included the line "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us are nearly identical in that regard.

(985 posts)I see all these Republican sheep in the political forum of a New England Patriots message board that I go to (mostly too frustrating to even look in there) posting about how the liberal MSM isn't covering that today's shooter was a Democrat, or how it's just like the "antifa" protesters showing how leftists become violent if they don't win.
They are undoubtedly repeating things from the unbiased, intellectually challenging media that they like to follow.

(45,433 posts)and try to pin it on us. Why bother thinking about it? They don't think like we do. They use alt facts and create their alt truth.
They pin Islamic extremists on us and try to reduce our diversity and immigration and basic human rights. If we oppose war, they claim we are supporting the enemy. They desperately want to associate terrorism with brown people so bad it hurts their own brains from the logical somersaults.
The requirements for something to be an act of terrorism:
1. the unlawful use of violence and intimidation
2. especially against civilians
3. in the pursuit of political aims
4. dark sin
White males can never be profiled. Conservatives can't be terrorists. Never forget this important fact. It's settled and must never be questioned.

All part of divide and conquer. Stoke the hate, stoke the fear on both sides. The banal, racist, sexist WHISIS type and the "Burn down the Obama house at all costs" resentment.
And now they have their sacrificial lambs to deflect attention from...

We grew up together on Florida's Space Coast, when people still believed in science. I moved to New England, he moved to Montana (can you see where this is going).
We've had lots of good natured political sparring on FB, but I'm getting pretty tired of it. While he totally supports Trumpsky (he insists that since he was in the Navy, he knows about security clearances, and Hillary Clinton's emails were a threat to 'Murkca), he claims not to have voted for him (like back in the day when you couldn't find a W Bush supporter anywhere). But he still thinks Democrats are just making a big deal out of nothing, Trumpsky did nothing wrong, we're just making stuff up because we hate him.
His latest was one of his "thoughtful" Hallmark Card posts wherein he tries to sound all kumbaya, but it's totally transparent. He said "We must all be UNIFIED in our outrage over the VA shooting. It is just the opening salvo when the start shooting at our Representatives."
I reminded him of Gabby Giffords, and asked where was his "unified" outrage then, when a crazed right-winger shot one of our representatives in the head. Oh, and Mr. Navy, they named a ship after her. His only response was "Oh, so you're saying the Salise shooting was justified?"
There seems to be no ability within the Republican mind to think beyond A or B. It is very troubling. And it is made much, much worse when the so-called President of the United States fans the flames. Indeed, even lights the fire.
