Nobody deserves that.
And the shooter was a real loser who beat his daughter:

Even people who vote to allow guns into the hands of people who should never have them.

(3,040 posts)In the end, we are all people. And, no one should have to go through such no matter how much we hate and disagree, we should never wish harm and should hope he has a quick recovery.

(841 posts)The early reports seemed to be very positive. I didn't see the latest reports on Scalise's condition. I hope he pulls through. This is very upsetting.

(3,613 posts)Now that bullet proof vests are commonly used by just about anyone in a government role, law enforcement is less likely to shoot someone in the chest. The pelvis is large, has bones that do not heal, and major arteries.

(16,858 posts)And then said he had undergone surgery and was in critical condition.
That's a serious injury and he's lucky to be alive. As others have said, this is a life altering injury. I've seen this injury before and it's a very difficult one to manage depending on the amount of damage sustained.

(99,710 posts)I don't expect you to be Dr. Bill Frist.
I know two people who have been shot, one in the elbow, the other in the shoulder. They had multiple surgeries and lots of rehab. Both never recovered full function but reasonably close.

(16,858 posts)But having seen these types of trans-pelvic trajectory gunshot wounds in the past, and the information provided that he's had what sounds like two operations and massive transfusion of blood products, it certainly could be life threatening. Again, it all depends on how bad the injuries are, what was injured, and how his body responds to not only the effects of the GSW, but to the surgeries and the effects of significant amounts of blood transfusions. Also, I'd wager he's chemically sedated and on the ventilator tonight, which has it's own potential complications, for example pneumonia and a condition called ARDS which can be precipitated by massive transfusion.

(11,949 posts)You cannot imagine the tissue damage they can cause. Nothing like a handgun
Do not think of a hole through the body, but an explosion in the pelvis.
My rifle holds 4 bullets and takes a minute or so to reload. This nut managed to get off over 50 rounds. We have got to ban large magazines.
What a f'in day!

(16,858 posts)Unfortunately, I'm a surgeon and always think the worst, lol. "Prepare for the worst and hope for the best". That mantra was beat into me as a resident. As soon as I heard he had gone to surgery, I knew it was bad. A simple GSW to the buttock wouldn't necessarily need an operation.

(25,816 posts)"Speier entered politics by serving as a congressional staffer for Congressman Leo Ryan. Speier was part of his November 1978 fact-finding mission organized to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by Jim Jones and his Peoples Temple followers, almost all of whom were American citizens who had moved to Jonestown, Guyana, with Jones in 1977 and 1978.[4] Speier was one of two members of the mission who made wills before traveling to Jonestown.[9] Several Peoples Temple members ambushed the investigative team and others boarding the plane to leave Jonestown on November 18. Five people died, including Congressman Ryan. While trying to shield herself from rifle and shotgun fire behind small airplane wheels with the other members of the team, Speier was shot five times and waited 22 hours before help arrived.[10] That same day, over 900 of the remaining members of the Peoples Temple died in Jonestown and Georgetown in a mass murder-suicide."

(14,249 posts)Earlier reports that he had been shot in the hip made me think it was little more than a flesh wound. I had no idea this much internal damage occurred.
This kind of trauma combined with the fact that he was lying out on the field for about 10 minutes without any medical attention clearly makes this much more serious than I thought.
Praying for his recovery.

We're supposed to be the compassionate ones.
You're basically saying, "Why should we care that the Scalise family loses their husband/dad?"
It's not a big leap from saying, "Why should we care about his death?" to being the guy who pulls the trigger. Think about that for a second.

(1,184 posts)Some progressive you are. Can we not engage people on gun policy without condoning ATTEMPTED MURDERS!?!
I really hope you're not someone who goes around talking about opposing war, banning the death penalty, and believing all religions and people can co-exist together, but then when a real, tangible case like this one comes along, you get a hard-on because a Republican might get his comeuppance.
People like you are fake because you don't *really* stand for humanity, just being sure you're on the winning side of an argument.

(15,286 posts)When my mom broke her hip, the surgeon told me there was a lot of blood and she wound up getting 2 units of blood after the surgery. When you think of bones, you think of skeletons where the bones are dried out. You forget that living bone is full of marrow and blood vessels.
