This past election a co worker who would sport trump hat t shirts pins on his suspenders. After the election we all heard how trump will do great things for this country. Well I ran into him last night he has been off since February health issues. And now we hear about how the left is out to destroy trump nothing is trumps fault. It is a conspiracy from the deep state , at dinner I said just let it go stop watching Fox News come hold my hand , I will show You reality is not scary. He replied with several choice adjectives actually quite a long reply I smiled.

(14,564 posts)With some if these folks, and simply say, "do you people have the first clue how disconnected from reality you are?"
They babble whatever nonsense, I look at them in the eyes and let them spew whatever brain washing has taken, let them finish, say, "OK" and walk away.

(12,841 posts)I get into his discussion well I do it because the delusional state that he is in. I have come to understand that reality is not in his bucket list. And also I get involved because I find him amusing, this is a guy who uses Craigslist as a dating pool. And how we have been entertained over the stories of his quest for love. One night he asked me what is your secret you have been married thirty years I said to him respect monogamy love he replied oh.

(49,001 posts)Tell him that you respect all the bedrock American values and that the reason tRump has 3 shaky marriages is that he respects none of them and is always about himself. Keep it that short.
With delusional types you need to restrict responses to very short sharp penetrating statements that don't attack the deluded person but shine a light one at a time on a contradiction between their beliefs and obvious reality. You have to crack their steel bubble and then they start to become aware of the light. Be satisfied with a stunned thoughtful expression on their face and let it go each time. Their bubble took time to build and solidify so it takes time for it to crumble.

(10,252 posts)I doubt he even knows what "deep state" is supposed to be code for "government." How those people can claim to love America and love the constitution and love democracy, yet hate government is a mystery to me.

(6,916 posts)I find the best way to get through to people like this is point out how Fox lies -- all your co-workers views are distorted by Fox/Limbaugh. If you don't slow that down, even if he comes around on DJT he'll start believing new GOP lies in a few months.

(10,437 posts)Have you ever heard a vegan eating steak after such encounter? nope, never
Bernardo de La Paz
(49,001 posts)The statement "It takes time" means that it will not happen "after such an encounter". A tRump voter is not going to be converted by one brief encounter, but is even less likely to be converted by a lengthy diatribe or rant or by an extended attack on their beliefs. But when you have a chance to repeat the technique, LIKE THE OP has with a co-worker, then it can work, over time, not instantly, not after one usage.
Further, your example is NOT analogous. A vegan has a respectable set of beliefs that are often rooted in respectable philosophic views or dietetic science. A tRump voter is a Republican full of delusions, lies, faulty reasoning, and sharp ** divergence from reality **.
I don't think you proofread your post either. I think you meant to write "I haven't seen any such thing be effective" (fixes two errors). It appears that you hastily dropped the negation. The word "affective" means to affect, such as a movie changing a person's mood. The word "effective" is more applicable in the context of this sub-thread because it means "efficient, powerful, useful, works better". Proofreading is very useful and I highly recommend it.
You have to start somewhere.
Defeatism like your post never gets anywhere.

(36,827 posts)Naturally he's a Trump supporter. I had to tell him to save the crazy talk for someone else as I didn't want to hear it. He hasn't spoken to me since, which as far as I'm concerned is a big improvement. I think one of the reasons Trump's approval rating keeps going down is because more people are starting to realize just how batshit crazy Trump and his supporters really are.
