The passage of Obamacare took over a year from the time Obama announced health care reform as a priority in a joint session to Congress. In the meantime:
The White House held a health care summit to explain the plan's goals.
A series of bipartisan roundtables with doctors, health policy and insurance experts helped develop the bill.
The House held months of hearings while drafting the bill.
The Senate health committee spent nearly two weeks debating and amending the bill, in a period known as "markup." The Senate Finance Committee debated the
legislation for the longest markup period in over 20 years for that committee.
The Senate held debate on the health care reform bill for 25 days.
Obama conducted a televised health care summit with congressional leaders.
The Congressional Budget Office issued a preliminary analysis of the bill five months before its passage, scored multiple amendments, looked specifically at its effect on
health care premiums and updated its analysis as new versions of the bill came out of Congress.
