Trump golf club demands massive tax break from New York town and wealthy locals are furious
http://www.rawstory.com/2017/06/trump-golf-club-demands-massive-tax-break-from-new-york-town-and-wealthy-locals-are-furious/
Some residents of the village of Briarcliff Manor, New York, are up in arms against a local Trump golf course, which is demanding that their community cut its property taxes in half.
ABC News reports that the Trump organization has filed a legal challenge with Briarcliff Manor to knock $250,000 off the property tax bill for the Trump National Golf Club, Westchester. ABC News notes that the organizations challenge is from residents who resent having to assume the burden of paying additional taxes to support town services and the local school district.
Ossining town supervisor Dana Levenberg tells ABC that even some Trump supporters have approached him and told him that the town needs to fight the Trump Organizations attempt to cut its tax bill in half.
And Gloria Fried, the receiver of taxes for Ossining, tells ABC that it is very difficult when you see someone who has all these assets at his disposal who would rather pay lawyers to avoid his civic duty of paying taxes.

(70,205 posts)....The Trump Organization is making a case for its big tax break by claiming that the Trump National Golf Club is only worth $7.5 million, which is less than half the $15.1 million the towns assessors claim it is worth.
ABC News notes that this is the same course, spread over 143 acres in Westchester County, that presidential candidate Donald Trump listed on his publicly-filed financial disclosure report as being worth $50 million in 2016.

(82,849 posts)Is trying to chisel the local government for a measly quarter million? Why doesn't the Trump Organization want to pay for the services it gets, and make its community better?

(3,056 posts)Sorry I can't remember the writer and provide a link, but here's his premise. He said he was a lawyer, not an accountant, but he did have some knowledge about this stuff. He said he thought Trump was broke, a theory about which I agree. He put forward a number of arguments to support his premise, but the one that jumped out at me was that Trump was willing to make too many risky moves for a relatively small payout. $50,000 here, $100,000 there sort of thing. Which is pocket change to someone who is supposedly worth billions. Everything he "owns" is leveraged to the hilt. American banks won't touch him. The only banks that would lend him money were Deutsche Bank, and (surprise, surprise) Russian banks, that are basically owned by Putin. Trump himself had made the comment that he estimated his net worth depending on how he felt that day. Truly rich people don't seem to have the obsession to flaunt their wealth like the golden gilded Cheeto-Jesus...they know they're wealthy. I'm willing to bet the real reason he refused to divest of his holdings is that he can't. I'm also willing to bet if both Trump and myself (and probably most of you) had to liquidate tomorrow, I'd be worth more than him. And I'm a teacher.

(82,849 posts)I read a profile on Ted Turner some years ago, when he still owned CNN, but was beginning to get out of the game. He was talking about the burdens of having more money than God (We should all have such burdens!), but mostly focusing on the Forbes 400, the magazine's annual rating of personal wealth held by individuals. He had noticed for himself that he was making business decisions not based on his philosophy or enhancing his holdings, but solely to move himself up on the Forbes list. A decision could be personally profitable, but not best for his businesses.
Trump never seems to have gotten to that realization, and it may have led him into the trap the article you mention describes.

(70,093 posts)the least he can do, the very least, is to stop these kinds of blatant attempts to use the power of his office to fuck over the "little people".
ffs.
talk about using your office to get rich. one thing to use it to rake in the dough at your hotel, and double the fees are your "winter white house" but to chisel people on property taxes. jesus christ on a trailer hitch.
