Trump's useful idiots like Mike Cernovich, Alex Jones, and Jack Posobiec are certainly making a case for it, but does the movement have any muster or will it die out? Or is this just the beginning and something much scarier will emerge?
The case for it being a fad: Fox News' sharply declining ratings and the unexpected results of the '17 special elections.
The case for it being here to stay: parents installing alt right "values" in their children, and children quoting Trump to bully their classmates. The ratings of Infowars and Breitbart.
The case for it morphing into something scarier: History. Particularly Russia and Germany. Look at the rise of Stalin, Putin, Hitler, and every other World War 2 era dictator. It may take a generation or two but don't think it can't happen here.

(6,630 posts)The so-called "alt-right" has always been around--the KKK, far-right gun nuts, etc. It's a matter of whether they're in the forefront of society or in the shadows.

(18,868 posts)KKK and John Birch Society. I did a paper on it when I was in High School and that was 1965.
They were just as awful then as they are now.
This is nothing new.

(100,070 posts)The Alt Right has been drumming up the civil war card, but they use way more divisive and violent imagery than we do. They want us dead. They would commit genocide against us if they thought they could get away with it, And then I saw that article on Buzzfeed a couple of weeks ago about how kids were quoting Trump to bully their classmates. Combine those two things and we'll see the rise of a new breed of American fasicm by the time these kids are old enough to vote.

(14,853 posts)... after I read MANY other posts of a fascist nature.
To be clear, I couldn't disagree more with what I wrote and, to my dismay, my post received several thumbs up!!
I wrote something like...

It's time for harsh measures to end this liberal lunacy! The liberal media needs to be controlled with severe punishment when they print or say anything against President Trump and his supporters! Liberals, socialists, and communists need imprisoned or killed when they express opposition to our way of life too . Muslims are a threat to our well-being and should be placed in camps until Trump can determine a final solution. We should also disregard so-called international treaties and agreements and expand the American way of life around the world with our military for our own safety. With Trump guiding us, this empire shall survive for a thousand years! Hail, Trump!

I HOPE that a few of the thumbs up came from people who recognized it was a parody of Nazi Germany, but my impression was that the reaction came from people who actually agreed with the fascist nonsense!

(14,853 posts)This country continues creeping toward fascism and it's mostly because of the messages of hate that largely go unchecked.
The Jews largely ignored the decades of hate that came from various sources in Germany too. Hitler and the Nazis didn't just turn on switch. The groundwork was done many years earlier.

(3,105 posts)Is why is this being legitimized? Why isnt Bannon/alt right questioned everyday, with every trump supporter? This is not America. I think about this stuff too much, I guess.

It will eventually die out. But probably not this century.
