Florida clash over Confederate street names leads to arrests

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Jun 22, 2017, 7:22 AM ET

Five people were arrested after a clash about Florida streets named for Confederate generals spilled over into a city council meeting.

News outlets report the protesters were charged with disrupting the Hollywood commission meeting Wednesday night.

The disagreement involves three streets — Lee Street, named after Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee; Hood Street, named after Gen. John Bell Hood; and Forrest Street, named after Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan member Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Jim Odel, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, told commissioners the street names honor an important piece of history. Resident Benjamin Israel called Lee, Hood and Forrest traitors.

Five of seven commissioners must back the plan to have the names changed. So far only three agree.

Which is still less than the number of years Reagan lived on after his brain shut down.

Grant, Lincoln, and Sherman streets would honor the same piece of history.

Having "ADOLPH HITLER" road running thru Borough Park in Brooklyn. How about Himmler alley? Goebbels garden drive? Not cool.
I live in Hollyweird and many of the east/west streets are named after presidents and "famous" types.
It's a slippery slope. Where do you draw the line? Washington and many other prominent people in history owned slaves. Slash and burn will remove the MLK streets too? Change everything to street numbers?? I don't like 13th street. 666 ave creeps me out...
Somebody is always gonna get pissed.
The commissioners have their work cut out for them...
