Encountered my first gay 45 supporter today

Gay supporters of 45 obviously exist but today was the first time I had actually encountered one personally. To my surprise, it was someone who I thought was largely uninterested in politics.

I had lunch today with a former co-worker I had not seen in years due to a change in jobs, a move, the passage of time, etc. He didn't vote in 2004 but he did vote for Obama in 2008. I have no idea how or if he voted in 2012. He never really seemed interested in politics in the past and I try to avoid talking politics at work since I live in a red state. I never detected any hints of modern day RW behavior when I worked with him years ago and he was always socially liberal back then as is typical of most gay men.

Anyway, during our lunch conversation today, he brought up the subject of 45 and he said he had voted for him and still supports him. I nearly spat out my food at that confession. I inquired why and he responded by saying he wants/supports a president who will shake up the system and bring some needed change to how this country operates. He offered some more babbling in defense of 45 which I had no interest in hearing so I changed the subject to old co-workers while I scarfed down my lunch as quickly as possible. Politics never came up again and we exchanged pleasantries before parting ways.

I have no idea what pushed him so far to the right during the several years since I had last spoken to him prior to his lunch invite. Financially he's fine as I think he's making a high five figure yearly salary in his white collar job. He had a Hispanic boyfriend many years ago so I can't imagine he's suddenly on board with all of 45's racism. He's not religious so there's none of that evangelical nonsense going on. He's not a gun nut or at least he didn't used to be. It's as if he had been brainwashed and joined a cult.

Regardless, I won't be accepting any future lunch invites as I try not to associate with 45's supporters. In retrospect, it's just weird to know an actual gay supporter of 45. It makes no sense to me but there are others like him in addition to poor or Hispanic or black or female or other human supporters of 45. There are all sorts of people we're up against here.

With the 2003 tax cut, unless you made more than $700-800K a year, you got zip from that cut.

Among my friends is a lesbian couple. One of them is a Democrat who can't stand 45, while the other is a Republican who thinks 45 has the potential to be the best President ever.

I am always amused at people who are surprised by this. Gay white guys can be some of the most sexist and racist assholes i have ever encountered in my life and many wealthy gay white guys want those tax cuts just as badly as their straight counterparts. They don't care that their fellow straight right wingers hate them, they often think they are the exception or find some other way to rationalize it.

because she went on a virulent anti Hillary rant and wanted to "make america great again". I never saw her post a single political thing the whole time I was "friends" with her and all of a sudden one day she went on this RANT. I feel the same as you about Trump supporters I am just used to encountering right wing gays so i am not surprised by them. I had one gay guy ask me in a gay aol chat rroom in the late 90's if i was proud of my RACE! lol.

with this, "To my surprise, it was someone who I thought was largely uninterested in politics."

He was likely taken in by the wanting to shake things up and not understanding what that might mean with Trump he voted for him.

Who knows. Crazy stuff. I really can never understand how people could get past his bigotry and encouraging violence.

Trump's views of health care were liberal (better than Obama care, cover everyone etc). Early on he was in favor of taxing the rich. People saw what they wanted to see in Trump, hence people you know and like voted for Trump because he would shake things up, change Washington, get something done. And they had heard Trump say some things they agreed with.

We could win that way too. Promise everyone the moon even if you know you can't deliver.

I knew she was a supporter when in August we happened to be at the same table as she and her partner at an Irish festival. She kept pushing her purse in my direction with a damn tRump button on it. Ugh......then when he won the damn election, she and her partner were bragging about going to the inauguration!!!!! And how they were buying new formal gowns for the occasion. Ugh. See them at least once a month at our retired women's lunch group. Her Facebook page was ALL republican shit for at least a month or two after the election, then all of a sudden she quit posting anything but murder mysteries. I haven't' had the nerve to ask her why she quit posting on her Facebook page. I'm hoping she realizes it was a mistake to vote for such a putz and piece of shit.

Most people vote in a way that they believe best advances their personal interests. Maybe your friend doesn't view a Trump presidency as a threat to his interests. Obviously the Trump admin isn't going to advance very many gay friendly policies, lest they offend whatever part of the evangelical vote they managed to capture, but from what I've seen it doesn't seem like anti-gay stuff is even on their radar. I'm a gun owner and a vocal 2A advocate, but I always vote Democrat because even though gun control is something I oppose and the Democrat party is for the most part very pro-gun control, I don't think the Democrats really intend to do any substantial work on gun control, and the rest of the party's platform is very appealing to me. I have other pro-gun friends who know that I'm a Democrat, and they have the same difficulty reconciling my feelings about guns and my politics as you seem to be having reconciling your friend's homosexuality with his politics, but they certainly don't avoid me over it. I think you should re-consider scrubbing this man from your circle of friends.

Think about all the high profile republicans who've been outed in gay sex situations...there have been quite a few. Maybe being gay has nothing to do with not being a Republican. Seriously, don't dump this person as a friend. We need to have more contact with people who don't share our views. It's a lot easier for people to demonize you when they don't know you. You know, bridges versus walls and all that.

Wanting to root out the corruption, cronyism, lobbying and money from politics. I'd guess almost everyone, both right and left, wants to see these things gone.

Almost....because if he thinks Trump is going to do this, he is wrong. Information about Trump has been out there for a long time for anyone to take it in. He is the epitomy of corruption and cronyism and it's been well reported over the years even though a lot of media outlets conveniently 'forgot' during the campaign.

So your friend choses to believe a corrupt, cronyist liar over his own good sense and years of information. Sad for him.
