Need some hugs...lost my dog tonight
She was the sweetest thing in my life....and this was totally unexpected.
Penny had been sick only a few days and wasn't eating much. I thought it was bad food, as there are some complaints against the manufacturer. On the way to the vet her leg gave out and she went lame; tore a tendon that had surgery before. Then they did some tests and we found out she also had cancer--tumors metastasized to every organ. She was in so much pain, no other choice than to put her down.
Never cried so much in my life....Dogs are so loyal and good, never argue, always there for you. She was my constant companion for nine years, our office mascot too....I work at a home office. Can't even type through the tears....Even harder because this was so out of the blue.
If somebody has that rainbow bridge, I'd sure like to see it again.

My heart goes out to Libertyville, Egalitarian Thug and pacalo. I cannot imagine not waking up to my Baby Girl's beautiful face every morning.

Out of the blue is so hard. I've lost 2 dogs out of the blue (one was also named Penny - such a sweet name for a dog) and it's so hard to be blindsided like that - especially when you take them in hoping to help them and go home without them. It will be a rough go for awhile. I'll be thinking of you and your Penny. Huge hugs.

All of us who have been through this with beloved pets can certainly empathize, and I share your tears. 
We found out our black lab, "Blackie," (named by my parents, who aren't very creative, don't know how I ended up to be a "creative"
had liver cancer a couple of years ago. She'd gotten skinny, except had a very large midsection.
I went and bought her a big steak, which she loved, then took her to the vet for the injection. She looked me in the eyes, in panic, then her eyes lost their sparkle, almost immediately, as she died from the chemical injection.
I cried, not expecting to feel much emotion till it hit me, and I cried. The vet left us alone for a few minutes.
She was definitely not very bright, at all, but knew when to jump up and run when I said, "What are you doing?" She knew there was an adventure, a trip to the mailbox, or at least a ride in the car, coming up.
The experience changed me, and, I imagine, you, as well.
I lost my little guy Dandy a year and a half ago, he had cancer too. I still miss him and tear up when I think about him.
I've been down that road as well and it's NEVER easy. The first time I had to put one of my cats down I cried for two weeks.
Take some solace for for knowing you did the right thing. As hard as that was to do.

I lost my beloved 12-year-old Boston Terrier, Gizmo, too, just one week ago. His stomach had gotten huge in just a few days; we thought he might have peritonitis. My husband brought him to the vet & we learned that he had a huge tumor the size of a football, plus an enlarged heart. Both were putting pressure on his larynx.
I know how hard it was to put Penny to sleep; it's gut-wrenching. What gives me comfort is knowing that if we had prolonged Gizmo's life, he would have been in greater pain as time went on; his stomach area seemed to be growing larger by the day. But the most comforting thought I have is the fact that Gizmo had a great life & he knew how much he was loved -- as was the case with Penny.
Gizmo is irreplaceable, but I'm getting another Boston Terrier next weekend. I believe that's the only thing that will help me come to terms with losing Gizmo. I need another little "toddler" in my life.
I'm so sorry for your pain, Liberty. I wish we could hug each other in real life right now. I know how devastated you're feeling.

Lost my sweetie girl (cat) last year around this time. It's tough for a while, then things get better, in a way.
Of course, posts like this away bring it up again, but it doesn't hurt as much as before. 
At least I'm not crying. Hadn't cried so hard since my dog died.
I had to put down one of my kitties a month ago...she was almost 17...and it's never easy to lose a friend.
The down-side of being human is we only get to have our dogs for a short while. I'm so sorry for your pain; I do understand it.

Dogs give us unconditional love. I'm sure your fur-baby gave you the best 9 years of their life.
My wife and I will be parted from our beloved yellow lab Hunny before too long. This beautiful member of our family has traveled with us on our vacations and hiked in many states, but she has slowed down considerably and is beginning to have trouble getting up off the floor at age 15 years, 7 months.
and my three pups send snuggles and kisses to you. I've had to do this three times in ten years and it never gets easier.
It's so hard with pets, because you can't explain to them what's going on.

Losing a beloved dog IS hard. It hurts. But try to remember how much you loved her, and she you, and all the good times you shared.
I wish I knew what more to say.
I don't care how much it is the right thing to do - having to put down your beloved friend is so very difficult. I had to make that decision over 3 weeks ago. My Chow Jasmine had been with me for over 14 years. She, too, had cancer, and it had metastasized to her lungs. Surprisingly, that night I started having terrible anxiety attacks until I got some sleeping meds from the doctor, but found out this is common. I'm still taking Valerian to help with sleep and trying not to think of her so much until the unbearable pain in my heart subsides. It's really hard because your dog was there at your feet, and at the door to welcome you whenever you'd return. They seem to be there, right in the middle of gatherings, or laying at the foot of the bed when you sleep at night. Just know you're not alone, you did the right thing, that she had a wonderful life loving and being loved by you. She isn't suffering any longer.

It's no easier when it's expected, either. I have been through it both ways, and they both suck.
My dog nephew died cancer that metastasized to every organ, too. They didn't know about it until he was near his end, as he hid the pain really well. He was a good dog.
....that's the best you or she could hope for.
