Kayaker’s first foray ends after close shark encounter

Chased by shark while vacationing on Cape

Before Saturday, Walter Szulc Jr. had never been in a kayak. By the end of the day, he had become the most famous kayaker in New England, the centerpiece of a photograph that has spread around the world.

The photo is of the moment Szulc looked back at the water behind his kayak and saw that he was going to need a bigger boat. He was being chased by a shark.

“I saw a long, dark shadow under the water, and I saw the fin,” he said of the moment he called the most terrifying of his life.
“To actually see it, to see the fin come out of the water behind me, it was a moment, almost like I was watching it happen to me,” said Walter Szulc Jr., Manchester, N.H.

What he did not see was the head of the shark, estimated to be 12 to 14 feet long. That is because it was underneath him.

The appearance of a Great White isn't exactly a new thing out on Cape Cod. They've been showing up more. A few years ago one turned up in Woods Hole and wouldn't leave until it was driven out. If you head down to the "elbow" of Cape Cod, near Chatham,MA this is where they have been seen almost regularly. They appeared some time after the return of Atlantic Grey seals, which is the prey they are following.

Still, If I was that guy, I would have been a little nervous, just to put it mildly. Maybe that was it, the shark couldn't make up its mind if that kayak was a seal or not. Eventually it thought not.

The vast majority of the time you'll never know.

12-14 feet is probably a juvenile. Maybe a small adult male, Atlantic whites run smaller than they do in the Pacific.
