New poll shows majority of Americans are unaware Trumpcare slashes Medicaid

New poll shows majority of Americans are unaware Trumpcare slashes Medicaid
Just 38 percent of people polled knew the Republican health care bill makes major cuts to Medicaid.
Kiley KrohFollow Senior Editor at ThinkProgress Jun 24

As Senate Republicans aim to force a vote on their version of Trumpcare — a bill that was written in secret, without public hearings, despite the fact that it will reshape one-sixth of the U.S. economy and impact the lives of millions of Americans — most people have been left in the dark.

Last month, the House passed their version of the bill, which would strip health care from 24 million people, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The bill also makes major cuts and structural changes to Medicaid, a health insurance program relied upon by nearly 75 million Americans — primarily low-income, disabled, and elderly.

The Senate version of Trumpcare goes even further, according to the draft released by Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Thursday, effectively phasing out Medicaid entirely.

But according to a new poll released by the Kaiser Family Foundation on Friday, only 38 percent of Americans are aware of the significant cuts to Medicaid that would be delivered by the House-passed bill (the poll was conducted before the details of the Senate bill were made public).

Seventy-four percent of those polled, meanwhile, said they have a favorable opinion of Medicaid.

All that they see, hear, and in a few cases, read from their media never mentions these details. They simply do not get that sort of discussion. Their media just talks about how many freeloaders and the like that will be cut off of Uncle Sugar's dole.

When spot checking Fox right after Comey was fired they were only talking about whether the new FBI director would re-open the Hillary email case. They did not mention the problems for Trump in doing what he did except to say they liberals were "hysterical" with Comey's firing.

Unless something is done about only 6 companies controlling 95% of what we see hear and read our country will only continue it's downward spiral.

I have an aunt in a nursing home who is on Medicaid. Her son, who does not take care of her finances, voted for Trump. When I tried to explain to him why that was not a good idea because Medicaid funding would likely be cut he calmly explained to me that his mother is on Medicare and has nothing to do with Medicaid. Yes, he is really stupid.

About one third of the American voters are truly clueless, ignorant rubes who just don't understand that they have been systematically poorly educated, misinformed and misled into believing that corporate republican dogma is in their own best interest.

The disabled - let's not forget Trumpf mocking that disabled reporter - people whose skin color isn't pearly white; so-called "welfare queens;" the elderly in nursing homes who are sucking their blood dry with taxes that equal "slavery,' etc., etc., ad nauseum. I would love for them all to have to pay the price of their fixation with Fox and their blind adherence to a biggoted authority figure who couldn't care less about them. Alas, the rest of us will pay also.
