Wisconsin had 34% conservatives and 25% liberals in the 2016 exit poll. That is a classic swing state. The national exit poll also had a 9% gap.

Our problem in Wisconsin was neglect. Previously no state with a single digit gap in that category had ever voted for the Republican in all the decades I have followed or looked up. In 2016 we managed 3 examples. But since the liberal/conservative percentage is not bad those states should return to our camp.

Iowa, on the other hand, was 40% conservatives and 23% liberals. That state is 91% white in the electorate. White males have shifted away from us. Ohio is somewhat similar although only 80% whites. The conservative/liberal split was 39-20. I would be very surprised if we carried either Iowa or Ohio in 2020, regardless of the nominee of either party.

Georgia is a fraud. I have no idea why we continue to hold hopes for Georgia. The state was 42% conservatives and 22% liberals. In other words, both categories would have to shift more than 5% in our direction to make it a swing state, let alone a favorable state.

Arizona is a different story. In all the decades I've followed this category, Arizona 2016 was the first state to report higher than the national average in both conservatives and liberals. The breakdown was 41-27. What a polarized state, with only 32% moderates.

Arizona is probably at least two cycles away but the 27% liberals is a great sign. The national mark was 26%. Arizona is 75% whites in the electorate, which is above the national average but trending in our direction. We really should make a big push to register Hispanics and other minorities in Arizona.

Wisconsin has 86% whites in the electorate, BTW. I should have mentioned that earlier. I'll never understand how we could take states for granted when the demographics were not overwhelmingly favorable. Those upper midwestern states may be more liberal than other regions but with below average minority numbers they were always vulnerable to fear and therefore betrayal.

She wanted to run four years ago but the stupid State party shot her down. She's from a small town, has been a farm woman, understands the state outside of Milwaukee and Madison, and is a damned fine person.

She would be my choice. Please, as much as I love him, NOT Madison mayor Paul Soglin. I am firmly convinced nobody from Milwaukee or Madison can win on the D side. The former would (has been) accused of coming from/running the "shithole" that is Milwaukee, and the latter would/has been accused of being from a liberal oasis. For the record I grew up in Milwaukee and went to school for 9 years in Madison, and love both places dearly. But now that I live in the western hinterlands of the state, I can see how differently people see things.

Vinehout would be great. I hope she's the nominee.
