Kentucky Gives Blessing to Bible Classes in Public Schools

In the beginning, there was a proposed bill that would allow Bible courses to be taught in Kentucky's public schools.

And it was controversial.

Now that Gov. Matt Bevin has signed the so-called "Bible Literacy Bill" into law, the ACLU and other watchdog groups say they are going to make sure the classes don't cross the constitutional line from teaching to preaching.

"Right now the language of the bill is very vague and the Kentucky Department of Education has not yet put together a curriculum," Amber Duke of the Kentucky ACLU said Wednesday. "The concern, though, is that you could have a curriculum that is constitutional and could be delivered in a manner that is not constitutional."

The Bible class as envisioned by HB 128 is a course solely "on the Hebrew Scriptures, Old Testament of the Bible, the New Testament." The purpose is to "provide to students knowledge of biblical content, characters, poetry, and narratives that are prerequisites to understanding contemporary society and culture."

It is also an elective, not a required course.

"They will not be teaching about the Koran or the sacred texts of other religions," said Duke. "That would be more of a comparative religions class. This is a Bible literacy class."

Though I get what you are saying. They obviously just want there "white" Jesus version taught. But the fact is none of this shit, including the Koran, should be taught in public schools. We need to move away from religion and a good place to start is making sure children are not be indoctrinated with any of this crap.

It would be good to illustrate that. Maybe in a world religions course.

" The purpose is to "provide to students knowledge of biblical content, characters, poetry, and narratives that are prerequisites to understanding contemporary society and culture." That is the Christian Church's duty. That's why we have churches.

I guess it's hidden behind the bible and other good reading propaganda for eager young minds in the library shelves.

When I think of all the things that would get me called into the principal's office while I was a teacher for over 15 years...

One time he came into my room after school to accuse me of teaching religion since a parent had complained. I am an atheist and never would have done that of all things. It turned out that the state social studies curriculum and required students edition of Ancient Cultures for 6th graders in CA had yin/yang mentioned in a paragraph about Ancient China. The parent was a born again Christian and once the principal saw the page in the book he said the parent was allowed to bookmark each page so that her child wouldn't have to study it or answer a test question about anything she felt was "pagan" teachings.
