It's ratings gold for them and they know it. Joe's been baiting Trump for weeks, calling Bannon "President Bannon" because he knows it makes Trump's blood boil. They know it's working, because lately Trump keeps tweeting in response to what they've been reporting, a-la "SOME fake news people say I don't know what's in healthcare bill-NOT TRUE!" or some such crap--right after they said it.
Today for the 2nd day in a row they made fun of him for his ridiculous fake Time magazine cover (and the irony of that). Then when Mika made the "teeeensy hands" comment, Trump snapped (in predictably self-destructive fashion).
It's such a perfect set up because like her or not, Mika is kind of America's sweetheart right now. She and Joe finally announced they're engaged after months of speculation (you gotta admit it's adorable). Her universally revered dad just died (she's the sympathetic daughter of a man with wisdom, character and leadership we only DREAM of these days). And then she baited Trump hard--both because he deserves it, and also because she knows doesn't have the emotional intelligence to resist making a personal attack. One could almost count on the fact that he'd respond like he did.
So why is this particular insult getting so much attention? Because yeah, he used to act like this all the time on the campaign trail, but since he's been prezzie, he's had to dial back on the pussy-grabbing and publicly perving on women who are just trying to do their jobs. It was bound to happen, especially given the mega-stress of nonstop coverage of his being investigated for all sorts of horrible stuff. So he hit on and demeaned an Irish press member (who COINCIDENTALLY is the spitting image of his oldest daughter, which makes me barf in my mouth a little), and then went right for the "bloody facelift" insult.
I don't think Joe and Mika are going to be apologizing tomorrow. I think they're going to play this for all it's worth. It's what they were hoping would happen. Shit, they already had the "tiny hands" Cheerio commercial all tee'd up.
