In a hastily scheduled vote last Friday, Germanys Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, voted to open marriage up to same-sex couples in a 393 to 226 vote, with 4 abstentions. The upper house is expected to do the same next week.
Those 393 votes in favor of marriage equality include all 6 of Germanys Muslim members of parliament. Ekin Deligöz, Omid Nouripour, Cem Özdemir and Özcan Mutlu of the Green Party, Aydan Özoguz of the Social Democratic Party, and Cemile Giousouf of the Christian Democratic Union confirmed to the German paper Welt that they identify as Muslim.

Germanys far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), responded to marriage equality with the same sense of doom that American homophobes are accustomed to using. The front page of their website is a death notice that reads, In deep sorrow, we say good-bye to the German family, whose constitutional protection was buried by the representatives of the people at the German parliament. The other part of the death notice announces that freedom of speech is dead, because the far-right doesnt see the difference between not having the final word on a topic and having no say on a topic.
One of the partys co-leaders, Alexander Gauland, told the Bild Zeitung that the AfD is considering a lawsuit. We are currently studying a challenge at the constitutional court, he said, without specifying details about the challenge.
While polling has shown that a majority of German people favor marriage equality, Angela Merkel and Cemile Giousoufs Christian Democratic Union is opposed. Last week, though, Merkel said that she would allow a vote, possibly to prevent this from becoming a campaign issue in Germanys elections in September.

(505 posts)Even the one Muslim who's in the conservative christian party voted for marriage equality, nice! I didn't know about that. (I didn't even know they "allowed" a Muslim to become MP for their party.)
Merkel voted against the bill. She believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, and she thinks that the bill might be in conflict with the basic law (constitution).
The AfD far-right party actually complains about freedom of speech because of another bill that was voted for directly after marriage equality. It imposes high fines on Facebook etc. if they fail to delete hate speech within 24 hours (or so). Some other politicians share their concerns, but there also is a wide-spread concern about hate speech on Facebook, Twitter etc (especially in light of the 2016 US election).
Interestingly, the other chancellor candidate for the AfD is Alice Weidel, a lesbian mom of two sons who is in a civil union with a woman from Sri Lanka (so clearly she's in love with "foreigners" and a "dyke"!). Maybe they'll celebrate their actual wedding soon. I wonder if the other AfD chancellor candidate, Alexander Gauland, is invited before or after his attempts to challenge the law at the constitutional court. By the way, there is actually no way for the AfD or Alexander Gauland to challenge the law. Citizens can only challenge laws and decisions at the supreme court if their rights are directly violated by the government, which is hardly the case with marriage equality. So there's only a special way for parliament (requires 25% of MPs) or a state (Bundesland) government to challenge the law.
(I have no idea why some parties have 2 chancellor candidates. The green party does the same, citing their feminist views, so they have 1 man and 1 woman.. But if they happen to win the most votes, will it be the male or female candidate who gets to be chancellor?! Of course, this won't happen this time and is unlikely to happen in the future. The German green party rocks BTW, it's nothing like Jill Stein, they are great coalition partners for the center-left SPD in my opinion.)
