Just looked out my kitchen window and observed the top of the Mt. Charleston mountain range on fire. Hope the air tankers get it soon or else it's going to get out of hand fast.
We've had little to no rain and all the vegetation on Mt. Charleston is bone dry.

(1,299 posts)I go down 160 about 3 miles from my house, turn left onto Carpenter Canyon and head up Charleston. About 7 mile into the mountain, there is a stream that goes down the side of the mountain, we park our 4X4, and walk up about another 1/2-3/4 of a mile and there are a couple of fishing holes.

(2,126 posts)and I remember going up Mt. Charleston many times, mainly to cool off. I also remember there was a lodge up at the summit (can't remember the name). That was the best thing about Vegas.

(1,299 posts)Me and the wife went up there last year and had some of the best hot chocholate I've ever had.

(2,825 posts)I read that some of the wildfires in Utah were started by people doing target practice-- bullets hitting rocks and causing sparks. Then there are cigarettes and out of control camp fires and trash fires.
Too many are man-made!

(1,299 posts)it's at the top of the mountain and we do have thunderstorm clouds over the mountain with a brisk wind blowing now.

(25,396 posts)But some of the other 5% are too weird for words. Last year - on July 2 - we had the 50-CALIBER Fire, caused by a fellow shooting his 50 cal into Hole-In-The-Ground, starting a fire, and burning 14 acres. That was southeast of La Pine, near Ft. Rock.
Last year and several weeks ago this fire season I have spotted and reported nasty little fires that started when yahoos burned their toilet paper after pooping in the woods. Really, WTF?
