You wonder what it would be like if dueling and defending honor were the rule of the day. One can only imagine the nightly news today. Watching a History channel special on Hamilton. Boy was it brutal. He even lost a son in a duel.

(29,575 posts)In a cemetery in Savannah, GA there is a grave of a young army officer who died in a duel with someone who used to be his friend. The duel was back in the early 1800's. They exchanged five volleys and neither one hit the other. The sixth shot got the guy right in the heart. You'd think after four tries or so they would have decided it wasn't meant to be.

Plus, as I understand it, the duels were kept nominally secret on an official basis. It is my understanding that they were officially illegal, but generally tolerated on a social level.
Any historians want to weight in?
My guess that if it returned as a social practice today, it would be generally Republicans shooting Republicans.
