Penn State fans are very loyal to Joe Paterno and all things Penn State. I grew up just on the edge of 'Happy Valley' (what they called the Penn State region) and PSU fans were a rabid sort of folks. I knew people who had room totally decorated in Penn State colors with fullsize cutouts of Joe Paterno in their home. This was not a rare siting, it was common. And these were not people who sent their kids to Penn State or graduated from Penn State - these were people who were fans of the team. Being in the part of a state that was halfway between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, it was pride to have a team of their own that was so successful.
I think Tom Corbett, while he was Attorney General of PA, made a stab at the investigation into the Sandusky/Child molestation case but I'm sure that there were people in power at Penn State who asked him not to interview certain PSU officials. And I'm guessing Corbett figured that if he was the one that brought down Penn State that it would have a major impact against him at the 2010 Governor election. Pittsburgh and Philly always went democrat but the 'T-zone' of Pennsylvania was Penn State country and hardcore GOP supporters. If he lost voters in that region he wouldn't be able to make up the votes lost in Philly and Pittsburgh.
Of course he fixed that problem now with the new Poll Taxes in Pennsylvania

(35,015 posts)I grew up there too and went to PSU; I know exactly what you're talking about regarding the fans and the Paterno worship.
I think Corbett's involvement was more than being pressured to not investigate; I think he actively worked to cover up what was going on; and then there's Ray Gricar....what happened to him, and was Corbett involved? How far would he go to protect his political career?
As this goes on, it's probably going to be a lot worse than we ever imagined. I hope every single one of these 'untouchable' assholes gets what they deserve. For the victims' sake.

My mom just told me that there's talk of taking down Paterno's statue and all things related to him. Good.

Question is how much damage he and the Republican legislature do for the next 3 years.

I think the spotlight as well, and I would like to hear his comments as to what he sought from Penn State regarding Sandusky.
I do recall one of the victim's mother's going to the police. What happened?
