Lawmakers nearing deal on Russia sanctions
Lawmakers are getting close to a bipartisan deal to make it harder for President Trump to lift sanctions on Russia.
Aides in both parties said late Friday afternoon that bipartisan negotiators were nearing an agreement, which could be finalized within hours.
The House is scheduled to leave for its August recess at the end of next week. The time crunch has spurred movement in bipartisan negotiations that have stalled for weeks over mostly procedural hangups.
The package includes new sanctions on Russia and Iran, and establishes congressional oversight of the Trump administration's implementation. It's now likely also to include sanctions on North Korea, which previously passed the House this spring in a bipartisan vote.
