a thank you for my MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION!!!!!! I thought I only gave a one time contribution. So I immediately sent a email to say I only wanted to give once. Then I did get a notice back saying that it would only be a one time contribution. Gotta really be careful of what I sign up for. Whew.......

(29,658 posts)had this happen. But damn, I can't afford to give EVERY month. Just saying.....when I get some extra cash I do give, but not EVERY month.

(4,483 posts)but I'm an old lady, and it's entirely possible that there was some small (or even large!) print on the donor form that I didn't read, so I kind of blame myself, but then I read your post, and maybe it's not because I'm an old lady but because they are a little sleazy. The thing is, it's so easy to make an online donation with a credit card or paypal, and those are two payment options where the recipient can set it up as a recurring donation without getting the donor's OK.
I donate what I can when I can, and my single donations are generally a lot larger than any recurring donation I might make, so it's adding insult to injury to not only make my donation recur but to recur at a much higher amount than I can afford month after month.
I'm glad you brought this up.

(51,590 posts)The DNC was a one time (no two) donation and they keep sending me requests for more in the regualr mail, but at least they give me stickers. I knowingly donated to Act Blue on a monthly basis but they keep hitting me up for more via gmail even though I donated more again. I can't even afford my ACA premiums (I am pretty ill) and would give more but I am very limited and am probably going to lose my health care.

(14,918 posts)with ActBlue. As you have said, it was fixed immediately when I contacted them. IIRC, I was told that some campaigns set the monthly payment as a default that is aleady "box checked" and must be actively unchecked, while others have the one-time payment as the default. I have also noticed this a few times with online charity donations. I don't like it, and try to be on the lookout for it now.

(29,658 posts)Thanks so much for reaching out, and I apologize for any confusion! I can confirm that your recurring donation has been canceled and it will not be charged again. If you have any other recurring contributions you wish to cancel, just let me know and I'm happy to help!
For future reference, each organization or campaign creates its own contribution forms, and ActBlue processes donations exactly how the contribution form is filled out when you click the donate button. Some organizations and campaigns choose to set their forms to have the recurring option pre-selected by default, which can result in signing up for an unintended recurring contribution if the option is not unchecked, which may be what happened here. To ensure that any future donation is not recurring, just make sure the "Make it Monthly" box is not checked before submitting the contribution form. If you have any concerns about the way a particular contribution form has been set up, I encourage you to reach out directly to the organization or campaign that created it and voice those concerns.
If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know!
Best,
Boyd

I just have to be more aware of what boxes are or are not checked.
