GQ: "John McCain Is the Perfect American Lie"

"John McCain is the perfect American lie, a man who professes to be noble and fair and just while being none of those things."

I was duped when I gave McCain my pitiable little sum all those years ago, but I know better today. Everyone should know better. Everyone should realize that John McCain is the perfect American lie, a man who professes to be noble and fair and just while being none of those things. He served his country honorably in combat, but in no other fashion. And he serves out his time in the Senate, and here on planet Earth, as a pathetic enabler. Never the lion; always the sheep. For seventeen years, gullible people have been waiting for him to make his face turn, to make some grand defiant move for the sake of God and country. But that was always just clever branding on his part, and today should serve as a cold slap in the face to anyone who still thought he might have that kind of political courage left in him. He's a fucking disgrace.

which some call moderates. But they aren't moderate, compared to Reagan's era.

Well, Susan Collins may be a real moderate and the exception. There may be a couple of others. The Senate should sell tickets to see them, since they are so rare.

in our society

I recall when he was running for President he was asked the question "why he voted against a day honoring MLK"? and he replied something to the effect that he made a mistake in that vote. Honestly, voting for a day honoring one of the great Civil Rights leaders of our time is not a difficult decision, unless of course at the time you are trying to cater to the racist vote.

His healthcare vote should not be a surprise to anyone.

McCain has always been against publicly funded health care, universal health care, or health coverage mandates

Anyone who thought his current medical condition would somehow make him more sensitive to those most vulnerable in our society, were duped

Even Matthews was defending him last night "reminding us" that he was just voting for procedures after his entrance and grand processional to a standing O. And then his speech that the media gobbled up. I will not vote for this bill in it's form as it stands or something to that effect. So, and stupid little amendment change comes up in the next vote and votes "all in". So, it is a new bill and "not as it stands", so he gets to continue this BS. I remember Kennedy with same cancer showing up for an elderly health care vote and stood up for seniors and healthcare. He didn't push them under a bus like Mr. Maverick did. He had the chance to end the health care BS and he didn't. A total asshole he is.

Big FRAUD. He voted AGAINST ACA, not FOR anything. He STILL thinks he should have been president. WRONG, Songbird. Let us see his military records, the ones he keeps sealed along with his medical records. He has been hiding something for YEARS. If he had followed orders and turned around with the rest of his squadron, he would not have been shot down. Also, if he had been at the class on how to eject, he would not have broken his leg. His wife waited for him, not telling him about HER injuries in a car accident. Then he got home, and left her. Slimy little bastard now and always has been, with a temper like a viper.

He's no hero, to me. Make no mistake, I give him credit for being a tough survivor, but he put himself in that situation by being a show off. That was his M.O. while in the Navy. What I'd love to see are his service records for the time before he was shot down. I wonder if you and I have the same suspicion about other problems his 'maverick' behavior might have caused.

Flying too low & hitting the power lines, causing a power outage for thousands of people. That's wrongly counted as one of the planes he lost—he didn't lose the plane, it made it back—but it was one of the incidents that showed he was a shitty pilot.

Nice work if you can get it.

And the scumbag, proudly walks in, like a hero, and announces ," Aye," to bring the vote to the floor. Maybe its the tumor, as he was nonsensical before they found it out.

The Republicans will leave him on life support, barely cognitive to get his last votes.

"He's a maverick! He's a straight talker! He follows his own mind!" That was always gushed by the Media about McCain, just before he docilely put on the White House Collar and voted Bush's way.

He's a fraud. He always has been.

From the very long, but informative article:

On his temper:
Over the years, John McCain has demonstrated a streak of anger so nasty that even his former flacks make no effort to spin it away. "If I tried to convince you he does not have a temper, you should hang up on me and ridicule me in print," says Dan Schnur, who served as McCain's press man during the 2000 campaign. Even McCain admits to an "immature and unprofessional reaction to slights" that is "little changed from the reactions to such provocations I had as a schoolboy."

On flip-flops:
In fact, his own statements show that he has been on both sides of a host of vital issues: the Bush tax cuts, the estate tax, waterboarding, hunting down terrorists in Pakistan, kicking Russia out of the G-8, a surge of troops into Afghanistan, the GI Bill, storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, teaching intelligent design, fully funding No Child Left Behind, offshore drilling, his own immigration policy and withdrawal timelines for Iraq.

On his POW experience:
But the subsequent tale of McCain's mistreatment — and the transformation it is alleged to have produced — are both deeply flawed. The Code of Conduct that governed POWs was incredibly rigid; few soldiers lived up to its dictate that they "give no information . . . which might be harmful to my comrades." Under the code, POWs are bound to give only their name, rank, date of birth and service number — and to make no "statements disloyal to my country."

Soon after McCain hit the ground in Hanoi, the code went out the window. "I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital," he later admitted pleading with his captors. McCain now insists the offer was a bluff, designed to fool the enemy into giving him medical treatment. In fact, his wounds were attended to only after the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a Navy admiral. What has never been disclosed is the manner in which they found out: McCain told them. According to Dramesi, one of the few POWs who remained silent under years of torture, McCain tried to justify his behavior while they were still prisoners. "I had to tell them," he insisted to Dramesi, "or I would have died in bed."

The article was written during McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, but it's still relevant. A long read, but worth it to understand McCain.
