The extortion has just gotten started. Putin wants Trump to be a severely damaged President. The more damaged he is, the more help he'll need from Putin to have a prayer in 2020, the bigger concessions Putin can get from Trump.

This is exactly what the mob does to business men they extort. They compromise them and bleed them dry, but they keep them going long enough so that they can ask more and more. It's like an episode of the Sopranos.
