When did political personalities take over public policy objectives?

This person is a _____bot. That person is a _____bot. This person is influenced by this ____ism. That person is influenced by that _____ism. I can ignore whatever they say because they belong to that party. I will champion whatever they do because they belong to thit party. None of this means squat to me when I'm sitting down trying to figure out how by bills are going to get paid.

Politics in the U.S has become a race to the bottom. Elections are not won by the most popular candidate, they're won by least hated candidate. This trend will continue as long as politicians value smearing opponents over promoting popular public policy goals. It depresses the vote just as much if not more than any voter suppression or Crosscheck vote scams and it's entirely self inflicted.
