(7,349 posts)So very proud of John Glenn, too......and proud, as well, for those brilliant women I had no idea played such an imperative part in our space program.

(16,859 posts)John Glenn was definitely always a liberal, and he unashamedly fought for those without a voice throughout his life. I had the great honor and pleasure of meeting him several years ago and I was struck by his sincerity and his charisma, even as an elderly man.

(52,162 posts)and even though I grew up on Ohio and voted for Glenn for Senate in the 80's and 90's, I had no idea he had stood up for her like he did. That said, the actor who played him in the film made him look like a bit of a doofus, and nice and principled doofus but a doofus nonetheless.

(3,056 posts)I don't know much literary license was taken, but the Al Harrison character showed some true courage for the day, also. And didn't you just love the looks on the people's faces when, in the reception line, Glenn broke from the ranks to shake the women's hands? Because you know that happened. Glenn was a true hero, and I knew he voted for the benefit of the people, but I had no idea he was this gracious. That simple action itself showed him to be a great man on many different levels.

(20,577 posts)some interesting conversations about it especially with regard to the woman who set up the computer program.
My neighbor was an accountant working at a bank when she learned there were personal computers. She brought one to work and did most of her work on her own computer - no on else in the bank had one but she changed that.
Another woman was the City Clerk in a town in Connecticut. She figured out how to use a computer in her job - no one else in the city was using one.
It was a great movie!
