The latest far-right march in Portland quickly staked a claim as the most violent.

The gathering of alt-right and white nationalist groups in Tom McCall Waterfront Park today immediately descended into brawling with antifascist counter-protesters that left several men bleeding and soaked in pepper spray.

The crowd at today's "Patriot Prayer" event was small—no more than 100 people on each side. It was a shadow of the events of June 4, when thousands of counter-protesters surrounded an alt-right "free speech" rally held in the wake of a double slaying by a white supremacist on a Portland MAX train. Since then, "Patriot Prayer" marches have had diminished attendance.

But these rallies, with their barely cloaked threats of racist violence, still have the power to disquiet the city and intimidate its citizens—especially when they kick off with a brawl.

you're choosing the side of oppression. It's a stark either/or choice. When you let fascists have a free run without opposition you HELP them recruit.

Most people don't realize that fascists aren't trying to be "fair" and aren't trying to win some sort of "debate". Their two-fold agenda with these marches is to appeal to the WORST of human emotions and prejudice AND intimidate with the threat of violence ANYBODY (including liberals and not just Antifa) who don't agree with them. This brings into their orbit people who agree with them, but are nervous about admitting it. Hence it's a recruiting tool which grows their movement. And every time they are ALLOWED to march WITHOUT a counter, they and their supporters consider it a win because they WILL gain supporters from it.

That's history talking BTW, not just me. That's the exact way that the Nazis gained power in the early stages in Germany. They weren't a majority, but they were willing to do anything and appeal to anybody's worst instincts. And the liberals of the time had the exact same attitude towards anybody who opposed them and you do in your post.

Finally, you don't have to worry about the democrats distancing themselves. It's their nature to allow the right to flourish and then "compromise" with them. Unfortunately, fascists aren't compromisers. After they get rid of Antifa (with your help), communists, socialists, and the organized working class, THEN they'll come after the liberals. That's the history of fascist movements.

Yeah you can make all the Nazi comparisons you want, and it's perfectly valid.

But my rationale behind this is that multiple times, Alex Jones and Mike Cernovich have been caught attempting to pay protesters. Infowars even sponsored that disgusting "CNN IS ISIS" contest a couple months ago.

They're setting up traps, and every time Antifa shows up to beat the shit out of them, we're falling into their traps. I would like to think we're better than to not fall for their bullshit. Because their ultimate goal is to discredit "the left" at every turn. And every time we fall for one of their traps, we're adding more fuel to their fire, and they love it. They thrive on that shit. The trolls become even bigger trolls. And the best way to stop trolls is by not feeding them, is it not?

6. This incident is very noteworthy.

And something we all should examine. It is not the first time the left and right have come to blows, but the frequency of it lately should be of concern. It has the power to sweep all of us up in a tide of violence. I would recommend plenty of soul searching and historical research on times we have experienced this to get a sense of what is possible and how to negate what we can. We should be able to learn from our past mistakes to avert tragedy. If not we might continue our predecessors failures into the future and create the same problems.
