Trump Fatigue Cure: Which Bourbon for your Old Fashioned?

Finding "Buffalo Trace" to be a nice fit, although very popular around here now and harder to get. Also tried Bulleit Rye, which worked well. There's a reason is the oldest cocktail.

Buffalo Trace is definitely a great bang for your buck. Elijah Craig (now "Small Batch" ) would work, too. I'd go up to a Four Roses single barrel. Up market from there would not really be a mixing bourbon, in my view.

Ryes are for Manhattans!

Or Old Taylor, a superb inexpensive bourbon.

IDIOTS! Rye is not bourbon, nor is Tennessee whiskey. An Old Fashion demands bourbon, made in Kentucky. No substitutes. Might as well make a mint julep with Russian vodka. Bleccch!

(I lack the enzyme to metabolize alcohol; I have gone to Emergency Room because of barbecue sauce)

but a friend-of-mine's brother co-owns this company:

I always order it as a test of a bartender's skills. Which bourbon goes into it is less important than the bitters used to muddle with the sugar. Wild Turkey is my call, if I'm asked, though.

There are so many different bitters now. That's why I order that drink, especially in craft bars. I like surprise variations in my old favorite. The cherry, though, is optional, as far as I'm concerned. I'd just as soon skip it, unless the place has something special.

I find Benchmark Old #8 (now owned by Buffalo Trace) to be the best bottom-shelf Bourbon. Unlike some others, it has a full body and isn't too sweet when mixed with colas. While I love Maker's Mark, Benchmark has 90% of the taste at less than half the price. Can't beat it.
