Postpone the 2020 Election? Many GOP Voters Say Yes

Goodbye democracy!

https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2017-08-10/postpone-the-2020-election-many-gop-voters-say-yes

Research by two professors finds that 52 percent of Republicans would be OK with postponing the 2020 elections if President Donald Trump told them it was the only way to ensure that only eligible American citizens voted. Other questions in the survey reveal the thinking behind that very startling statistic: While Trump won the the Electoral College, nearly half of Republicans surveyed believe Trump won the popular vote, too -- even though Hillary Clinton beat him by about 3 million ballots.

Further, 68 percent of the GOP-inclined voters surveyed June 5-20 believe millions of illegal immigrants voted in the 2016 election, and 73 percent believe voter fraud occurs somewhat or very often. Those numbers are at odds with legions of studies indicating that non-citizen voting is very rare.

6. Many voters don't believe the system matters to them

We must either convince them that the system matters, or that we have something to offer them. We must offer something that will entice them to vote. Otherwise it's 2016 over and over.

But every time we've hoped "they're so awful, voters will turn out for us" it's ended badly. I remember thinking this about Kerry in 2004. Bush was an incomparable moron, right? Surely they'll turn out for us. It didn't happen.

If there's anything I've learned in nearly 20 years as a Democrat, it's that we must offer something to entice the voters. That's how we, the Democrats, win. They, the right-wing always turn out. Like it's their religious duty. Every time. We need to convince voters that we'll make their lives better.

Here on DU, GD and GDP became two new forums, one for those who were angry and needed to vent and those who were upset and demoralized and needed support and sympathy. I mostly posted in the latter.

The thing about Trump is that it's tough to escape hearing about his outrageous and dangerous behavior. Just today I had to discuss how awful he is with my dentist. But I agree that we just can't sit back and expect people to be freaked out enough to do the right thing. We need to keep people informed and GOTV more than ever. I'm sure hoping we won't have to endure this perpetual nightmare until 2020, but we need to start now working to ensure a Democratic majority in 2018 - and start cleaning up the mess long before 2020 - because it's going to take a lot longer than that to get back to a government we can have confidence in...

It's hello democracy all over again!

Secondly, instead of delaying the next election, perhaps they should consider canceling the last election instead ...
