Why does nazi rally organizer Kessler have a police escort?

I just watched numerous videos of Kessler's attempted press conference and he seems to have a police escort protecting him when the crowd is chanting at him.

However, there were reports yesterday in Charlottesville, of men dressed in security/police type outfits that weren't official.

ADD: Okay I've seen some of it. I wouldn't characterize the police in the Kessler appearances as an 'escort'. Looks to me more like they were there to keep the peace in security capacity.
