It' rather simple. They are part of his base.
And at the present time, he needs his base more than anything.
Although they may not be very large in numbers, they have a large number of sympathizers within the Republican Party. If he loses the neo-Nazis, he also loses another large portion of his base.
He is already in the low 30's in the polls and he cannot afford to lose anymore support. He needs them. If he drops further in the polls, there is the possibility that the Republican establishment, who has supported him up to now, will no longer stand behind him. They will no longer have his back. That is his biggest fear at the moment, except for maybe Robert Mueller?

(25,183 posts)We all know that Trump is a narcissist, even his supporters acknowledge that, even if they don't say it exactly that way.
I'm sure Faux Snooze has been making him aware of the more violent speech, and even actions of the antifa movement, and he certainly saw some of that in the footage of the Charlotteville melee earlier in the day. The "from all sides" was his swipe at the people who oppose him most forcefully, it seemed to be a bit of an afterthought. Yes, I know I'm on shaky ground ascribing a thought process to him.
He'll wash his hands of the affair by having his wimpy AG go after Federal hate crimes charges against Fields, and seek a death penalty for them, like Dylann Roof got. Few on the left or the right will criticize that move.
