Have a FB debate going with someone right now who said that Trump was defending the people who came to VA from historical preservation societies and free speech advocates. They weren't part of the White Supremacists and they got unfairly lumped in with them.
My contention as this was advertised as a White Pride event and they likely knew exactly what they were getting into before they arrived, and that on the off chance they didn't know before they arrived, they sure as heck knew exactly what they were choosing to be a part of after they arrived.
Any decent person would have seen what was going on and either A) simply went home, or B)walked across the street to join the anti Nazi protesters.
Does anyone know of any stories of these supposed "innocent" historical preservation society types telling their stories? Any stories of them leaving? I would bet this is all just tripe from Right Wing websites.

(19,066 posts)Succinctly put and I added it to my FB response.
It was obvious to me yesterday that Trump got 100% of his information about Charlottesville from Alt-Right sources. And the best those sources could do was to come up with false equivalencies and distortions.
White privilege right before our eyes.

(19,066 posts)That's because you would have to be a complete idiot not to know exactly what this rally was about. I have no doubt that some Righties wanted to go, but stayed home after they realized what was going on, but to think someone went to the event without knowing what it was is a huge stretch. To say that those people then stayed and are good people is simply not believable. Good people would have at minimum left.

(19,066 posts)And I specifically chose to discuss Friday night since that's the gathering Trump singled out to defend. Were there separate events from the torch march? Because anyone who participated in that march is sick.
