A family has settled a lawsuit against People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) after it took a girls unattended dog and put it down. The legal outcome ends an attempt to in effect put Peta on trial for euthanising hundreds of animals each year.
Wilber Zarate from Virginia had sued the group for taking his daughters chihuahua from a mobile home park on the states eastern shore and euthanising it before the end of a required five-day grace period.
Zarate alleged Peta operated under a broad policy of euthanising animals, including healthy ones, because it considers pet ownership to be a form of involuntary bondage.
Peta denied the allegations and maintained the incident in 2014 was a terrible mistake.
Two women affiliated with Peta Victoria Carey and Jennifer Wood travelled to Accomack, Virginia, because they said a mobile home park owner asked for help capturing wild dogs and feral cats.

(42,862 posts)I view that organization with the same contempt as I view any cult, or cult leader. They're about as goofy as the anti-vax crowd, or Scientologists.

(12,618 posts)Stop making the rest of us look bad PETA! I love animals so much, I'm going to steal your dog who probably would never survive on his own in the wild and die a lonely death filled with suffering from his home where he has a warm bed, plenty of food, and people to love him and MURDER him. You're free now little dog! Fly away!
Fucking idiots. As far as I'm concerned, PETA should be charged with cruelty to animals for this one. If anybody ever kills my dog, you better pray that the police get to you before I do.

(19,064 posts)They can be incredibly dumb, but they've also been incredibly effective. Without PETA we would have no idea about the horrors of factory farms. And while they are still brutal, many positive changes to factory farm conditions have occurred as a direct result of PETA's actions.
But they do do a lot of idiotic things too.

(42,862 posts)... I can think of at least ONE other well-known organization that may knock them from the #1 slot... or perhaps it's a tie... maybe a close 2nd place. (For obvious reasons, it's best that I don't elaborate further.)

(41,977 posts)Animal rights activists are often very honorable and do a lot of good for animals. Then there's PETA..

(5,170 posts)This is not a first time for PETA. Events like this occur often in understaffed underfunded shelters in the "Possom Trots" of the world, in off the map locations, etc. but Norfolk, VA? In a high visibility charitable organization?
I admire most of PETAs work, but not this event.
This is heartbreaking to hear again.

(16,887 posts)This same organization is currently suing the photographer who owned the camera where the macaque monkey took a "selfie" smiling and they are demanding that the monkey owns all the royalties and rights to the picture and they (PETA) should get those royalties and monies on the monkeys behalf and to benefit their cause.
Cray cray PETA in my opinion...
